Show THOUSANDS ATTEND FUNERAL 07 JOHN HENRY SMITH Over 10,000 people of all denominations denomina-tions gathered in the tabernacle at noon , Tuesday to pay their last respects to i the memory of President John Henry Smith. t Never before in Utah has there been such a funeral. No more fitting tribute has ever been paid to the popularity of a citizen of Utah. From all parts of Utah and southern Idaho the thousands gathered to show their respects for the dead churchmin and on every side could be heard words of genuine sorrow at his sudden death. When the doors of the big auditorium were opened at 11 o'clock, several hundred people were waiting. Forty -five minutes later there was not a seat left in the gallery or the main body of the house, witn the exception of those whicn had been reserved. To the south of the stand sat federal, statecity and county officials, while to the north were many members of the constitutional convention of which Mr. Smith was president. Immediately in front of the stand were seated members of the BrotherhooJ of Locomotive En- 1 gineers, members of the general boards of auxiliary organizations of the church and invited guests. The stand and lower part of the great organ was draped entirely in white, j while from the center of the organ hung a large American flag with a 1 picture of the dead president in the center of it. The floral Offerings were without doubt tne most profuse ana elaborate ever seen at a funeral in this state. From '.t to 11 o'clock Tuesday morning morn-ing hundreds of friends visited the home of President Smith, 23 North West Temple street and gazed for the last time on the face of the dead churchman. church-man. At 11:55 the fu.ieral cortege entered the building from the north door. It was the signal for all in the building to rise to tneir faac, a position tnay retained re-tained for a littla over cen minutes, while the family, immediate friends and churcn officers entered tne building The solemn procession was led by Francis M. Lyman, Apostlas Hab. r J. Grant, Charles W. Penrose and Orson F. Whitney. They were followed by the fjllo-vi.i apostlas, bearing tha casket: ReeJ Smoot, H.M.Smith, Geo. F. Richards, David O. Next Mrs. I Josephine G. Smith a.id two of her chilJr.m, and then members of the family, immediate friends, members of the first seven presidents of seventies (and lastly President Joseph F. Smith, his counselor, Antnon H. Lund, and Patriarcn, John Smith. As soon as all were seated Bishop F. S.Tingey took charge, and tae services were commenced: President Lyman, Gov. Spry, President Presi-dent Lund, Reed Smoot, Rabb.i Freund, and President Smith all snake feelingly of the grand life of the tteceased, and the choir and others rendered many beautiful selections. |
