II they would save the extra rainfall, a large quantity of water would be stored in the subsoil for immediate use in case of dry weather. Three or four inches of rain carried car-ried over from one season to the next means three or four hundred tons ol water an here in the subsoil watei enough to carry a growing crot through any ordinary weather. It il possible to carry even more that this from one year to another. How can the rainfall be saved' Plow the field as soon as the crof has been harvested. If it is spring ot summer, follow the plow with a drag The rains will soak into the soil !n stead of running off the surface oi evaporating. Fall plowing should noi be dragged, as there Is danger of the soil either packing or becoming drj and blowing. The extra expense of following such a plan ought not to cost more than a dollar an acre at most. Manj places It could be done at a mucc smaller cost. It pays big interest on the Investment, even at the highei figure. While moisture conservation doesn't spell sure cure for crop failure, fail-ure, it is worth the effort. |
