Show SENATOR SUTHERLAND CIVEN ANOTHER TERM As has been confidently expected for these many months Senator George Sutherland received the unanimous vote of his party in joint session of the Utah legislature this week and is elected to serve the state for six more years as ; senator. There is no question of the I ability of Mr. Sutherland for the place ! and his record for good works is well knnwn. The following brief sketch of his career is not out of place at this time: Senator George Sutherland was born March 25, 1862 at Buckinghamshire. England. When a child he came to this country with his parents, who made their home in Utah county. It was in Provo that Senator Sutherland was raised. His early education was in the public schools and he attended the Brig-ham Brig-ham Young academy, now university, at Provo. He was in the law department depart-ment of the University of Michigan in 1882-3 and was admitted to the bar in 1883. He was a member of the first Utah Legislature and distinguished himself in that body for his learning and sound judgment. He was elected to Congress in 1901 and served until 1903. He declined de-clined a second term. He was a delegate dele-gate to the Republican national convention con-vention of 1900 and also in 1904 and was elected to the United btates Senate in 1905. Prior to taking his seat in the highest law-making body of the nation he was the senior member of the law firm of Sutherland, Van Cott, Allison & Riter, but withdrew from that firm after being be-ing elected to the Senate. |
