Show EXAMMATICN m APPOINTMENT APPOINT-MENT AS FOREST RANGER The United States civil service commission com-mission announces an examination for assistant forest ranger on October 19 and 20. The examination will be held at National Forest headquarters, in Utah at Ephraim, Esealante, Kanab, Logan, Moab, Panguitch, Provo, Rich- I field, St. George, Salina, Salt Lak City, and Vernal. Candidates must be abli-bodied men between the ages of 21 and 40, capable of enduring all the hardships of outdoor life. The examination consists of two parts: (1) the answering of practical questions relating to land surveying, timber estimating and lumbering, land laws, mining, an 1 the livestock business; busi-ness; and (2) a field test including riding rid-ing and packing. Practical experience rather than book learning is the first requirement. Ability to make maps and to write intelligibly, however, are necessary qualifications. Applicants must also be residents of the state in which they seek employment, and rhould be familiar with local industrial conditions and topography. Assistant forest rangers are appointed appoint-ed at a yearly salary of $1,100, and are eligible to promotion to higher grades, including vacancies in the position of deputy supervisor and supervisor. When permanently assigned to a National Na-tional Forest, rangers are provided with headquarters consisting of cabins, barns, and sheds, and with some agricultural agri-cultural land on which to raise food for their families and domestic animals. The duties of forest rangers consist in transacting the business of the National Na-tional Forests under the direction of the supervisors. They protect and control con-trol their districts, enforce the National Nation-al Forest laws and regulations, build rr- trails, telephone lines, and cab-;;i cab-;;i i. flight forest fires, estimate timber aa 1 aiake small sales, handle the graz-i graz-i a x business and must be able to deal tactfully with all classes of people having hav-ing business relations with the forests. 'Vhen necessary th ranger must own and maintain his own saddle and pack animals. Applicants can secure information concerning the examination from the United States civil service commission at Washington, D. C, from the district forester at Denver, Colorado, or from any of the supervisors with headquarters head-quarters at the points previously mentioned. |
