Show His Unhealed War Wound. Veterans and near veterans were fighting all the old battles over again in the street car. Thrilling escapes es-capes and blood curdling adventures had been related by the dozen when the turn came to a little old man with a long beard. Stroking this adornment carefully, the old man said: "Well, boys, the war cost me Just $900 in cold cash. I didn't want to go, so I paid a substitute the money to serve for me. Do you know that fellow went all through the war without with-out getting a scratch? I could have done the same thing and saved my money. I tell you, war is a calamity." Kansas City Journal. |
