Show ALUNITE NEWLY DISCOVERED DEPOSIT AT MARYSVALE i i I (Continued from last week) I The deposit at Marysvale is a some-what some-what uncommon occurrence in thia country. It consists of a larpe and very regular vein, apparently a true fissure filling, as the miner-il alunite occurs in uniformly banded crystalline structure struc-ture without evidence of replacement of other substances on any considerable scale. The alunite here is massive and is found both in bodies of compact earthy or granular texture and in clear crystalline crystal-line masses, varying from white to a decided pink color. The vein has a northwest-southeast course, has been traced bv rrosnecting for a distance of about 3,500feet along the outcrop, and is known to outcrop in the extension of the same course halt' a nrle or more beyond be-yond the prospected ground. It apparently ap-parently stands nearly vertical in part but tjward the southern extension of the outcrop appears te be inclined to the southwest at a steep angle.' The j wall rocks area much silicified portion of j the volcanic flows which from the great-' great-' er part of the Tushnr R ine. The j size of the vein and apparent purity of i the material are probably its most un-, un-, usual features. According to a number j of measurenents made from the pres-I pres-I ent incomplete development, there is in one pUce at least 20 feet of solid alunite in the large vein and 6 feet ' more in a parallel vein some 25 feet I away, with considerable quanticies of alunitic rock and alternating purer I alunite and siliceous wall rock interven-j interven-j ing. This low-grade rock may possibly extend beyond that shown in the present pits. Other measurements madi reveal less thicknesses, but in each case it is j doubtful whether the trencies that ! have been dug expose all the alunite I that may be present. The discovery is of especial value as indicating the conditions un ljr which ! such deposits occur, and for ic; effect in I stimulating and directiug t ie search for deposits of like character which may be reasonably be expec e I elst-where, elst-where, especially in this generil region J On the discovery of other such deposits ! depends the possibility of developing from material of this character a home production sufficient to meet a large jpart of the nation's need for potash. |
