Childs (Published by request) How little we think when we quietly sit In our Valley homes, far in the west; And each reigning queen in her own little home. How we're truly and wonderfully blessed. This day of all others! this glorious day! Twas just seventy-one years ago When Joseph the Prophet with only a few Of his most faithful followers met Nauvoo With majestic mien and voice soft and low, Said, "I now turn the key. for woman. " Do we know what that meant to its fullest extent? Let us study well history's pages And turn back the scroll-book far in the past, At the thraldom of woman through aes. The ponderous gateway of learning was closed, With a sign-board attached to the centre That pierced to her heart like a poniard of steel Thus far and farther you enter This was the case 'till the boy i prophet said In low measured terms and lowly bowed bow-ed head I now turn the key for woman. Mark wed the change, All countries invite Their sister in every vocation; She stands nw the equal in learning with man And, with him fit for every station, Her sweet titntle presence will ever be felt On the battlefield strewn with the dying In the lowliest cot her sweet -vords ! are balm j And gladden the heart that is j sighing, i AH earth should rejoice and giv'raise j to that man ( yv ho aided our God in His glorious ! plan When he turned the key for woman. j (Continued on last page) i B Josis h. Child j Can we read in eur own lives the blessings bless-ings that came To us through that oreaniza t'rn Effected by Joseph the Prophet t h : t day, For our growth in this last dispen sation? 'Twas not to just look to the wants of the poor Tho' in this lies our mot sacred duty; 'Twas to brighten the talents, God unto us gave In this world full of misery and beauty For how could we learn the wry bfing closed The grand things that Father upon is imposed Had he not turned the key for woman? Let us hallow the day and hallow the man That was sent by our Father above To open the door of all womankind To help in her mission of love; May we hraoen our rhoughta, and brighten our minds. In our glorious school, here in life, To prepare us for greater things in the'' beyond. When we're, done with all sorrow and strife. May we merit the bless ings that Father has given When Hi? gave to the prophet that message from Heaven To turn the key for women. |
