Show CASTLEDALE MASSMEETING FAVORS WATERWORKS Another big boost for Castledale was given by Castledale citizens last Wednesday Wed-nesday night when a big msssmeeting of representative taxpayers went on j record in favor of the installation of a water works system by a vote of 70 to 4! This proposition ha? been worked on by the town board for a long whilp, even before the splendid example was set us by our neighbors in Huntington, but with a great deal of local prejudice to overcome, the subject was entered in'o with care by the town dads. Their wisdom is now plainly shown in the little hoped for great favor with which the proposition seems to be going to me.t with. An estimate of the proh-able proh-able cost, made by Richard R. Lyman of Salt Lake, the engineer in charge of the Huntington work, was laid before the people. This estimate was made on the basis of an 8-inch main line, which it is probable will not be needed to furnish Castledale on account of the great fall and consequent large amount of water that will be carried. It also covered a larger equipmenl than it is thought that Castledale will really need. and so the figures of $13,600 may be considered to be an outside figure, for the entire system notwithstanding the fact that the tanks were not included in this estimate. These will be located under the Mammoth Canal and will be lined with cement and perhaps covered at any rate, thoroughly protected though the covering feature has not been entirely decided upon yet. The stake board of education has made a tentative offer that the town may improve on their present Academy reservoir site and also uncover and use the present trench that runs to the institution, in-stitution, and the Academy could then connect with the city supply. The town will be able to vote bonds to the extent of 12 per cent of the assessed as-sessed valuation, or something like ! $15,000, and can secure the money from the state at the very low rate of 5 per cent, though any number of outside security houses are anxious to secure the same. A special bond election will be arranged ar-ranged for at the next regular meeting of the town boar J, and work will then : begin just as soon as possible thereater, ! if the people vote to put their city on i a par with its ranking sisters, and provide pro-vide one of the first necessities of life : to its present and prospective citizens in its pure and undefiled form, instead : of choking its people to the point of ; drinking the water from the ditches, ; and providing against another winter's i water famine. j One of the best features of the mass-! mass-! meeting was the open, hearty support : of the many who have fine cisterns j that have cost hundreds of dollars in ! building. It certainly points well to the local pride when we find such sacrifices sac-rifices being mr.de for the benefit of the ge leral public and prosperity of the community. I |
