A superb film biography of Martin Luther King will explode on your television screen for three straight nights beginning Sunday. Chances are the Rev. Jesse Jackson wont like it. The movie, simply entitled "King, is expected to attract an enormous audience. NBC believes it will be the most definitive examination yet of the human rights movement spearheaded by Dr. King. "KING IS bound to leave a bitter taste in the mouths of some of Kings associates in the civil rights battles of the 1950s and 60s. Among them is the Rev. Hes one of several colleagues of Dr. King whose roles have been amalgamated into composite characters in order to prevent the film from becoming too confusing or bogged down. Its a policy that has been followed in quite a few other such historical In an exclusive interview with The Chicago Tribune, Abby Mann, the writer, producer, and director of King, said he omitted Jackson from his movie for a variety of reasons. doeu-drama- s. 260-464- 6 "I had to draw the line somewhere, Mann explained. Otherwise, the film would have become too burdensome and cluttered with too many minor characters. Also, Jesse Jacksons con- tribution to Dr. Kings movement was relatively minor, especially when compared to Ralph Abernathy or Andy Young, who were much closer to Dr. King and were with him for a much longer time. MANN ALSO pointed out that many of Kings associates were outraged by Jacksons showboating immediately after Kings assassination in 1968 in Memphis. (Jackson hopped a plane to Chicago while the rest of Kings staff accompanied their leaders body back to Atlanta. The next day Jackson addressed the Chicago City Council while wearing a shirt stained with blood he said belonged to Dr. King.) If he had portrayed Jacksons relatively minor" role in the Ki..g crusade, Mann indicated, he also would ha ve had to depict J acksons controversial conduct after the murder of Dr. King. Apparently he felt it was strictly a side issue that only could distract viewers from the main element of the story. For his part, Jackson is maintaining a very low profile in the matter.
