Show Vanadium. Vanadium added to ".teel imparts great resistance to shock and to the "fatigue" caused through constant bending; and the high-carbon vanadium steels make much better tools, such as saws, cutters, and riveting dies. The use of vanadium in cast iron is also said to be beneficial. Metavanadic acid has been used to some extent as a substitute for gold bronze in paint, vanadium chloride is used in fabric printing, and vanadium trioxide in dyeing. The United States Geological Surv y has just published a report (Bulletin 530-k) entitled: "Notes on vanadium deposits in Colorado, Utah, and New Mexico," by Frank L. Hess. This bulletin bul-letin is of interest because of the scarcity scar-city of sources from which vanadium can be obtained at a cost which will allow al-low its profitable use in the arts and because be-cause of the greatly increased demand caused by the use of vanadium in steel manufacture. The report covers studies stu-dies made Ly Mr. Hess of deposits near Placerville, Colo., near Green River, Utah, and in the Sierra de los Caballos, N. Mex. |
