Adjournment of thq Mexican convention at Aguas Calientes Wednesday night without acting on the proposed resignation of General Carranza Car-ranza as first chief, pending the arrival arri-val of additional delegates representing represent-ing Zapata, was announced Thursday In official dispatches to the state department de-partment from Consular Agents Caro-thers Caro-thers and Kanova. October 20 was tentatively agreed upon as the date for reconvening the convention. In secret session Wednesday the convention agreed that its authority In Mexico should be declared supreme on the arrival of the Zapatistas. The. reports indicated that Carranza's resignation res-ignation was not actually presented and would not be until the convention reconvened. Both Oarothers and Kanova reported report-ed that harmony reigned at the close of the session. Prior to the decision to defer final action on Carranza, however, there ,were many heated debates,, which threatened to disrupt the convention. The dispute was started by a resolution resolu-tion introduced by Colonel Eduardo Hay, providing that the convention be declared supreme as is stood. Villa delegates, according to the of-ficial of-ficial report, opposed this, urging thai; Zapata should be fully represented at the convention until any final action was taken. They threatened to leave unless this course was followed.. Colonel Hay made a speech, it was said, in which he declared that the leaders represented at the convention should combine to put down any rebellion re-bellion against the government finally set up by the convention. General Obregon and General Angeles made speeches counseling harmony. Finally Colonel Hay withdrew his resolution and introduced another providing for the sending of an urgent Invitation to Zapata to send delegates and the postponement of action on the resignation of General Carranza. In secret session it was decided to declare de-clare the convention sovereign and this fact later was announced in open session. ses-sion. The administration leaders were of ;the opinion that the outcome of the (convention made it probable that all factions in Mexico would be able to come to an agreement which would include the suppression of minor discordant dis-cordant elements. |
