Mix, melt, cast into molds, and roll to shape while hot. It sounds easy and it appears attractive, but what of the initial expense and magnitude of the construction necessary to supply facilities with which to do this work? When Provo decided to have a steel plant a good many people laughed. When the site was secured there were still 'a few who believed that it was unwise to expend $160,-00and wer indignant at the idea of the steel corporation asking for donations. A few months have passed since that time, and those interested in the growth of the steel plant would be amazed at the progress being made, and also astonished at the astounding figures relating to materials used. That the construction has not lagged is indicated by the statement of J. engineer in charge of the work, who reports that with the exception of the stacks work is ahead of schedule, and if continued will mean the completion of the first unit of the plant sometime next March instead of April, Many people who visited the site a few weeks ago were dissatisfied on account of the work apparently being done so slowly. This, however, was not the case as excavating was being done, and without examination difficulty could easily be encountered in determining the accomplishments. Today the blast furnace rises to a height of eighteen feet; the coke ovens are rapidly taking shape; two stoves are installed and two more are soon to be set up. Derricks are straining under heavy loads, swinging back and forth; the air hammers of the steel workers resound, betok-in- g the general activity at the site. The present unit,, although representing an expenditure of $4,500,000, is but one of four that will be completed as rapidly as possible. During the coming week the Heine company of Chicago will arrive - to commence work on the stacks; three of which are to be built, two of these 240 feet in height, will be constructed on the steel site, while one o? 200 feet will be built for the and coke ovens. Two gangs of men will be brought by the Heine company to supervise this iyork. The plant will be one of the higgestssets to the company, which is following the system only used since the war, whereby the various chemical products securable from the coal in its various phases of consummation are extracted. Prior to the use of this method only about 10 per cent of; the were obtained, an the remaining portion was imported from Germany. Today over 90 per cent are placed on the market, eliminating the necessity of undue importation. Work on the power plant has been under way for some time, and upon the completion of the cement understructures the piping of the various turbines and other power producing machinery will be commenced. All this machinery! is en route here. The facility in securing material has been one of the most pleasing items in the work, and the amount being received daily is large. The mere fact that 200 carloads of material for the plant are in transit at the present time bespeaks the rapidity with which the work is beingdone. These shipments, if consoli- dated, would reach for a distance of more than 8,000 feet or constitute, J cargo for four large trains. If the bricks' that have been were placed'lengthwise and Attached, they would reach from Prcfvo to Salt Lake City after encircling this cjty, and extend over 100 miles beyond.
