However, Ruth, like all human emgiues capable of trptaendous power, will generating cease functioning with a startling abruptness one of these afternoons. Maurice McLoughlin, the tennis champion from the Pacific coast, was an athletic freak in that he mastered the essentially scientific game of tennis by the sheer force of his bulletlike service. Attached to his great speed was an accuracy that was little short of astonishing. Others had had speed but lacked control. Still others had had control without speed. The Comet, however, had them both, and as long as he wras able to whizz the white ball across the net heights. But there is a limit to human energy, and when McLoughlin with terrific velocity he ruled the reached this limit he faded from the championship scene as quickly as he had arrived. Many of his contemporaries, you will note, are still listed among the first ten. The freak of the prize ring illustrates convincingly the futility of a radical departure from accepted standards. No freak has ever held an important championship. Only one has ever come cloise. And there have been many freaks in the game sumed all sorts of fanta tic, cubistic attitude in the ring.
