Tinnin said sNX a fourth day has been added to the competition and that seemed to help things run a little smoother. One thing that hurts us is once the sophomores, juniors, and seniors start swimming with their high school teams, they have to swim unattached in these meets. Their points cannot go toward a team total, he said. Kearns Youth Aquatic Team has 50 swimmers, with 40 of them eligible to compete in this years holiday open. This man loves athletics and the young men who participate with him in the great game of football. He starts his season early in the summer and spends days all the way many long, sixteen-hointo November. Youre right he is the head football coach at Keams High School. His name is Bruce Takeno. I first met Bruce at South High School in 1961. He was a linebacker and a tough one, capable of hitting you so hard your kids would ur 155-pou- limp. Bruce was the kind of player that all coaches love. The sort of guy who said very little yet accomplished a great deal. He showed a quiet type of leadership that inspired his teammates to play better. They trusted him as men trust quiet men. He was good at what is known as the Riddell treatment putting the helmet on the ball carriers numbers. Although he started out small and tough, he later, by the use of weights and maturation, became big and tough as a linebacker for Westminister College. Takeno has paid the price as a coach, just like he did as a player, by coaching two years at Westminister, two years at Judge Memorial High School, and three years in Anaheim, Calif., before coming 190-pou- Water (pv (gyp PRINTING CENTER In the Kearns Shopping & Business Center 5494 So. 4220 W. 967-530- 1 (Next door to the Kearns Improvement District Office) Bruce Takeno Heater-$11- 6 40 gal. The dues have been paid, the apprenticeship is over and the payoff is near for Coach Takeno. Good things are about to come his way. This past season, his team was very competitive in the region as the Cougars went and were close to a playoff berth. Kearns has had a good football program in the past and things look good for the future under the able leadership of the Bruce Takeno is well known in the coaching circles and well respected by his peers. They know him as a tough and wily competitor who battles to be a winner. Bruce has turned out numerous college players, with good technique and determination like their coach. The most recent are Kevin Singleton, who plays at Southern Utah State and Farrell Price, a d tackle, who interests all the local hard-nose- d colleges. And so, we have a good player, a good person and a good coach. I give you the man, Bruce Takeno. SIMONS SAYS Takeno means bamboo, but in the case of Bruce it ought to mean Sundew because the Sundew plant devours human flesh the way Takeno used to devour ball carriers.
