Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY JULY 12, 2000 Community River Canyons coming to Kanab 6 Serena Supplee brings her southwestern themed watercol-or- s to the Kane County Travel Council this month, with an opening scheduled for Friday, July 14 from 8 p.m. Her work will be on 6-- display until August 10. Supplees work takes its inspiration from the river canyons she explores as a river guide. trips keeps her grounded in the natural beauty that characterizes her work at the same time that her raft can become a mobile studio, allowing her to paint her emotions right on the spot. The Gorges Galore series will be the centerpiece of Supplees show. For Supplee, these paintings reflect her ongoing appreciation for the rivers and canyons of the Southwest. When Im surrounded by the oldest visible rock next to the Colorado River, I feel Im as close as I can be to Mother Earth. The rivers g rhythm in contrast to the ancient vishnu schist and oroaster granite excites my spirit to paint. And to show their enthusiasm for the concept, dogs romped and their people cheered on the state capitol grounds during the launch of No More Homeless Pets in Utah. We are here to say we will no longer accept that healthy dogs and cats are put to sleep in shelters, Best Friends Director of Outreach Gregory Castle declared during the June 29 kick-of- f in Salt Lake City. Castle is also director of No More Homeless Pets in Utah, a five-yeplan to make Utah the first state to end the killing of adoptable shelter animals. The unprecedented effort will involve 18 ll sanctuaries, shelters and foster oiganizations, two traditional humane organizations and the states 54 animal control facilities. Standing in front of a large campaign banner at the foot of the capitol steps, Castle called on the people of Utah to join the initiative to increase adoptions and spayneuters so that a tragic situation - 46,000 ar no-ki- shelter deaths in the state last year - will be brought to an end by 2004. Castle designed the ambitious program that will be administered by Best Friends and financed largely by Maddies Fund, aCalifomiafoun-datio- n that promotes animal welfare. On hand for the launch was Maddies Fund communications director Lynn Spivak, who presented Castle with a $ 1.3 million check, the first installment on an $8 million grant for the entire program. Spivak was equally optimistic about the No More Homeless Pets in Utah (NMUtah) campaign. Maddies Fund is very fussy about who we give our money to - were really very stingy and particular, she said. But we have so much confidence and faith in the staffand in the vision and creativity of this group, we are confident they can get the job done Spivak called NMUtah almost unimaginable and such a fantastic notion thatitwillhaveamajor effect across the entire country. Another way to support the effort isbysterilizinghousepets. Discount coupons worth $20 on neuter clinic will travel the state to make the surgeries easily accessible in remote areas. This is an extraordinarily difficult undertaking , Castle said at the launch. What were trying to create is nothing less than a revolution. For the first time in the country a plan is under way to eliminate the destruction of dogs and cats in an entire state. CasUeremmdedhisaudiencethat over the last 30 years, other revolutions have taken place - from the civil rights movement to the ban on smoking in public places. I know we are going to be shout-ingfrothe rooftops when we reach our goal when it is totally unacceptable to take the lives ofinnocent animals, Castle said. And we are close.
