Show SOUTHERN UTAH NEWS WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 2, 1996 Community Legion Auxiliary month for the American Legion Auxiliary. The N ational Convention was held in Salt Lake City, where participants among many speakers had a chance to hear presidential candidates Bob Dole and Ross Perot speak. Major themes this year were the Citizen Flag Alliance (a movement to give states the option to make it illegal to desecrate the flag). Americanism and volunteerism. President In Carol Sullivan attended a Western Division National Leadership conference in Las Vegas, followed by the Southern Utah District Fall Conference. This year the American Legion Auxiliary at Salt Lake state theme for our state Auxil-iar- y President is dealing with Carol Sullivanfl), District 7 President and Ann Westfall(r), local American abuse- - physical and mental. We're Legion Auxiliary unit President, attended the National American Legion Convention in Salt Lake recently. gearing up for a busy year. mid-Septemb- er, Special Service District notice Property owners in the Cedar Mountain area of Kane County will shortly be receiving their real property tax notices. As has been the case for many years, included on the notices will be the fee charged by the Western Kane County Special Service District No. 1 for collecting and disposing of solid waste from Cedar Mountain. The District provides this service by placing dumpsters at numerous loca- tions on the mountain. The solid waste from these dumpsters is transported by the District to the landfills that it operates. One landfill is located near Glendale, where most of the Cedar Mountain solid waste is deposited. The other landfill is in Kanab. To pay the cost of providing the service on Cedar Mountain, the District assesses a fee against the property on the mountain. This fee is imposed on each and every subdivision lot, whether or not the subdivision is recorded or lawful under applicable law, and on each and every other parcel of real property, whether or not the parcel is in the configuration of a subdivision lot. This fee is applied to each lot or other parcel regard il WTO! HUB September has been a busy less of whether it is improved or unimproved, occupied or vacant. Parcels of real property on Cedar Mountain containing certain commerical establishments may be provided a different level of service, which will be billed directly to the customers by the District at a different rate. The fee that the District charges for collection services in the Cedar Mountain area is $20 per lot per year. The fee has remained the same since 1992, though the amount ofsolid waste removed by the District from Cedar Mountain has increased dramatically since 1992. As has been done the past several years, the fee for solid waste services on Cedar Mountain is being billed directly on the real property tax notices, which the taxpayers should receive shortly. The fee is due and payable at the same time as real property taxes and should be sent as part of the property tax payment to the Kane County Treasurer. The Treasurer will turn the fees over to the District. Any delinquent fees are subject to interest and penalty charges. All fees not paid, together with interest and penalties, may become a lien on the land. If any taxpayer owns or has an interest in more than one parcel of real property in the Cedar Mountain area, that taxpayer may petition the District to reduce the fees against the parcels. However, to be eligible for a reduction in fees, the multiple parcels must be contiguous or abut- ting. In other words, the parcels must share a common boundary or border one another. All petitions for a reduction in fees must use a form provided by the District. Copies of the form may be obtained by writing to the District at P.0. Box 36, Kanab, Utah 84741, or by calling the District All petitions at (801) must be completed and received by the District no later than March 31, 1997. 644-508- 9. More good corns with the S E gene are, Miracle, Tuxedo, Tender Delight, and of course vested. As this is written, I cant beand lieve it is cold as it is! Were hoping by the time this is in print well be enjoying an Indian Summer, without a freeze between, to allow us to put our last corn planting into the freezer. So far, weve eaten very well, filled many jars late-Septemb- er with fruits, jellies and jams. Weve pickled cucumbers, done relishes and various tomato products. But weve filled only our bellies with corn, and how delicious it has been. My good friend and partner, does not always appreciate my habit of tryingnew varieties each season. But its certainly a good way to find the very best growing and tasting vegetables. Yet, what may be our best choice may not be yours. Has anyone tried Breederss Choice sweet com? Its been available from Burpee until this year, but a grandson in Colorado provided us with seed. It truly is out of this world in taste and tenderness, plus it seems to have excellent resistance to turning old before we could get it all har Kandy Korn. As many of you know, corn needs a consistent supply of water, lots of warmth, and rich soil. Its a great help to add side dressings during the growing season. My method is to spread a fairly heavy mixture of soybean meal, soft rock phosphate and Jersey Green Sand through the furrows and till it in, just before watering, when the plants are about six inches high, again when knee high, then when it begins to tassel. The plants grow healthy, with a deep green color, and stalks become strong and thick. The soybean meal adds nitrogen, soft rock phosphate provides phosphorus to increase seed yield and fruit development. The Green Sand supplies potassium, which improves keeping quality, color and flavor of fruit. When potassium is lacking in the soil corn ears fail to fill out.
