Just how real this problem is, is shown by the fact that the hospital case which just a few years ago cost $166.00 now costs $231.00-a- n increase of 39 per cent. of wage and price controls, January 7th Through the 12th And February 18 Through 22nd AVERAGE COST PER DAY FOR IIOSPITALIZ-TIONHAS GONE FROM $16.00 TO $23.10 Please take advantage of these dates to secure your License Plates T Another factor which has substantially contributed to the increase in the number of hospital employees is The fact that most hospitals have now been week to compete with forced to move to a industry for competent personnel. In most instances this has required hospitals o hire an additional shift k to meet their operation. d The cumulative effects of these additional wages, greater services, equipment, and week-have added to the cost of hosa shorter work We in care. America pital enjoy the highest standards of hospital care found anywhere. And because we receive this most of our hospitals are care at the lowest possible cost. 40-ho- ur around-the-cloc- factors-increase- non-profi- WAGE LEVELS RAISED The factors contributing to this increase are built into the nature of hospital operation." Hospitals are personal service institutions. Their work requires presence of highly skilled individuals and the utilization of sound judgement as well as hard work. Tins leaves little Or no opportunity for personnel replacement by machines to obtain increased productivity. In fact, in their role of caring for the ill and injured, hospitals are expected to emphasize human warmth and understanding rather than mechanical efficiency with its loss of individual consideration. 's z Since there is little opportunity for hospitals to obtain increased productivity, salaries constitute one of the major increases in the cost of operation. . In the past, hospitals benefited from the lower wage scale and limited employment oportunities available to women inasmuch as female employees make up a large part of all hospital payrolls. ..When the necessity of war production demonstrated equal ability and sometimes even the superiority of women in certain types of industry, hospitals not only had to keep pace with general wage increases but were forced to do a double step in upgrading their entire salary levels to meet the going wage scales of industry. It is inescapable that any general wage increases on the part of industry compels hospitals ta grant equal increases to their personnel, with little or no opporThe tunity for gains from increased productivity. result is an upward trend in the cost of hospital care. facilities for making change. Purchase Them at STANDARD JUDD INSURANCE AGENCY Phone 417-- J The dramatic progress made in the various fields changed the picture of hospitals. Hospitals are no longer the fearful places we might have to go as a last resort but are now recognized as the centers of health care in our communities. Improved surgical-medictechniques, new drugs, modern scientific equipment, now enable qualified physicians and skilled technicians to and combat those diseases which just a few short years ago threatened our healthy, happy lives. This, however, has added to the cost of hospital care by requiring additional trained personnel on the part of hospitals. Evenone has the right to expect the benefits of medical discoveries to he immediately available within the hospital. As medical science progresses there is no other alternate but for hospitals to keep pace by furnishing the necessary facilities and trained personnel to provide these benefits. Every medical advance, however, can be measured in terms of increased costs at the hospital. Yes, hospital service costs more, but patients are receiving more advanced senice. The complexity and intensity of hospital senice today is reflected in thefact that the ratio of 1.4 employees per patient in 1946 has now increased -- to approximately 2 per patient.
