The area, in eastern Kane County, was visited recently by Explorer Scouts and Boy Scout leaders on an , exploration trip. Both the canyon and the lake are believed to be unnamed, and the Scouts asked Senator Bennetts assistance in getting them designated. The canyon runs east frem the Escalante River approximately six miles, south of Cow and Fence Canyons. Th lake is at the head of the canyon. Sen. Bennett has asked the Board of Geographic Names of the U.S. Geological Survey to give immediate consideration to the proposed names. Three years ago the Utah senator was successful in getting Explorer Peak, in the high Ulntas, officially designated. The most of the day was spent in discussing wheat allotments, and since I am not officially concerned with this part of the program, I did not attend. In the afternoon, we discussed whether an ACP payment should be made on a pond that was used for stockwatering, if there was a pond that had filled with silL upon which a payment had been made in the immediate vicinity. After everyone had expressed themselves, and after everyone had changed his mind at least once, we finally decided that since it is often necessary to let a pond dry for two or three years before It can be cleaned, another pond at the same place would be justified. . .This is, provided one pond was used for stockwater, while the other was being dried so that it could be cleaned. Just building a pond, with no intention of going back and cleaning out a pond already built will not qualify. A lot of you have been asking me when I was going to have it rain, and I have said that I didnt know anything about The other day I clipped an advertisement from a widely read farm publication that tells those of you who might be Interested, just how to do it. It seems that you can buy 3040 bullets made in calibers, that Kpag, and can be fired in any rifle of appropriate caliber. All you have to do is pay $8.00 for three of these bullets, and when a good cloud comes over, cut loose and run for cover. The address of the company supplying the bullets will be supplied upon re quest. (I make no promises, however.) $3.00 Yearly; 10c Single Copy Contract In 1957 Dexheimer said that the Bureau expects to award a contract for Glen Canyon Dam in March 1957. ' . Dexheimer said that the Arizona Highway Commission has agreed by resolution to pay the additional cost of widening and otherwise constructing the Bitter Springs Road to primary highway standards and expects that this route will become , a primary highway in the federal system. The Arizona Highway Commission has requested that the bridge also be built to primary highway itandards and has to. participate in the cost over and above the cost of a bridge which would be required the B of R for construction purposes... The dam will be of concrete 700 feet In height, with a reservoir of 26 billion acre feet backing up a lake extending 100 miles upstream. Nothing Oo Townsits Dexheimer said the Bureau expects to have a permanent town In the vicinity of Glen Canyon Dam for housing employees required to operate the dam, reservoir, and power plants and expects to build this permanent town so it can be used during construction also. "It is essential of course that It be located so that it will not only serve satisfactorily during the construction but will be in the best location for the permanent operation and maintenance, he said. "Questions regarding location, water supply, and other service facilities such as power lines, sewage disposal, and general living conditions will be considered before the location is determined. He added that a maximum of 3,000 to 4,000 employees will be working in the vicinity of the dam during construction period. Dexheimer said that the question of providing concessions, motor courts, trailer camps, stores and other facilities is being worked out but until such plant are announced the Bureau cannot consider applications for such concessions. Inquiries regarding the project should be addressed to the Regional Director, Box 360, Salt Lake City. The Denver office of the B of R, at Building 53, Denver Federal Center, will Issue Invitations to bid on various work and will be contracting officer for construction of the dam.
