See also editorial, page two. Senator Barry Goldwater today expressed amazement that the State of Arizona would agree to permit Utah to biuld an access road to the Glen Canyon damsite across a part of northern Coconino county. The Arizona Senator said that construction of this dam 15 miles upstream from Navajo Bridge across the Colorado River at Marble Canyon could mean millions of dollars to the northern communities of Arizona, and likewise be of great benefit to the entire state. Bureau of Reclamation officials have indicated they favor construction of the townsite for the big project on the west, or Utah side of the river, which would have the effect of diverting business and traffic to Utah Instead of south into Arizona. Last Saturday E. G. Kirby and Frank Jensen, photographer for the Salt Lake Tribune were driven by Elbert (Farmer) Swapp to the wilds around the Glen Canyon Dam Site. Leaving Kanab Friday they stayed that night at the ranch of Farmer and left the next day on the picture taking tour. They took many pictures on the trip including. This leaves me he said. "I sin- dumbfounded, cerely hope that I have misconstrued the meaning of these stories and that Arizona has not agreed to any such move that would have the threat of depraving northern Arizona of much of the potential revenue from this construction." Bureau of Reclamation officials meeting in Phoenix with Arizona officials a few days ago urged construction of a road from Kanab, Utah, to the damsite from the north; a bridge across the river at the damsite; and another road from there to the west connecting with Highway 89. At least three tentative sites for this road have been considered, one conecting with Highway 89 near the present Navajo bridge, the others at different points to the Sun, said . V further south. Tessa Riggs Findlay Laid To Rest In Kenab Wednesday Former Kanab resident Tessa Riggs Findlay, 69, died Sunday at a Salt Lake City hospitaL Funeral services were held in Salt Lake City and graveside services were held Wednesday in Kanab where she was buried. She was born in Kanab on March 28, 1887 to Herbert Edwin and Sarah Sabina Adams Riggs. She was married to John F. Findlay January 20, 1911 In Pocatello, Idaho. She had lived In Salt Lake City for 29 years. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She is survived by a daughter, Gevene Findlay and a son, Aquil-lRiggs Findlay both of Salt Lake City: a brother, Nathan A. Riggs of Kanab and four grandchildren. Prayer offered by Virgil Riggs, counselor of bishop; remarks by Bishop Meeks; vocal duet "I Walked With Jesus by Sharon-n- e Roundy and Chamelie- - McAllister. The grave was dedicated by Bishop Meeks. Senator Goldwater favors the construction of a route from Highway 89 south of Navajo bridge at Marbel Canyon to the damsite instead of a loop road directly connecting Utah with the project "Certainly the northern Arizona communities that are either on Highway 89 or adjacent to it and 'on Highway 66, or the Santa Fe realroad should be the logical rail and road heads for the construction of this dam, the Senator wrote the Sun. "Knowing the country around the damsite .as I .. do, I feel It would - be much easier' to construct a road from Highway 89 to where the dam is to be built than to contract a road from Utah. Could Mean Millione Construction of this daman mean millions of dollars to the northern . communities of Arizona and likewise be of great benefit to every town and city In the state, as well as to the state Itself. . . I am sincerely hopeful that your editorial efforts to awaken the responsibile people of Arizona to this fact will prove successful to the end that present Highway 89 will provide the needed access road to Glen Can- yon dam.
