F-1- 2 There is an old axiom to the effect that a stich in time saves nine. From past experience, this applies double in conservation. Many of the practices which are established upon the land require a certain amount of maintenance If this is done regularly, or at the appropriate time it often saves considerable time and money at a later date. A good example of this is what happened to Grandon Holgate and Cecil Pugh in Hurricane Valley last summer. A dike put in several years ago to divert wat-- t into their reserviors had been gradually worn down by cattle trailing to and from the water. I hey had planned to raise it, but before they got the work lone, a flood came down and ook out the dike and the wash ut down until it looks like a small Grand Canyon. A contract-ir- s estimate on the cost of building a new structure in the hugh gully is a good many times as nuch as the cost of repairing the original dike would have been. There is bound to be times when it is impossible to get someone to do the work and there isnt much that we can do about it; just as was the case with Cecil and Grandon. It will help us all, however to do some prior plannirg and make repairs just before they need to be done, ins'ead of waiting until it is too late. A meeting of the board of Supervisor's was held Monday night in the SCS office in Kanab. Present at the meeting were Mark Swapp, Donald C. Sv?pp, and Elson Riggs of and Lamond Heaton of Also present were myself and Wayne Rose. - County Agent. We discussed the inlander of events for the coming year and made preliminary plans for tours of conservation and range practices, and of weed and fertilizer demonstratiosn. We also planned to hold an irrigation demonstration to give farmers an idea of how much water they are actually putting on their super-vsor- s Ka-ral- i, land.
