Show A6 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 21, 1999 fAROUNDlDAVISl CLIPPER TODAY manager says sale will benefit customers ZCMI BY TOM BUSSELBERG Clipper Today News Editor LAYTON Saying he realizes his comment sounds like a canned response, ZCMI Layton store manager David Haight told the Clipper Today he believes this is going to be a very fortunate move for customers. He backed that up with better offers, more merchandise at a better there's no question of that. pnce the huge buying power of Noting Meier & Frank, whose marquee will eventually appear on ZCMI stores, will benefit customers because of the tremendous buying power of the stores parent May Co., with 400-plnationwide. "Purchasing power is very important. There isnt a corporation that has much greater purchasing power than May Co.!' he said. Referring to the anticipated eventual opening of all ZCMI outlets but downtown on Sundays, Haight said "that always will be difficult, especially m this community, but we will get through this May Co. is very sensitive. It (Sunday opening) is something that is traditional with retailing We are one of the last holdouts! He said that "the employees are taking this quite well. You can imagine the unknown is always difficult. I met with some of the chairmen of the board and organization of Meier and Frank. Im very impressed, its a fine organization. I'm very excited with the merger. I think it's going to be good for my employees and for the community "I've worked for ZCMI now for 24 years, loved it dearly. It will always have a place in my heart...betng a small fish in a major ocean, it's nice to climb off the small boat and get on the big one. Haight said its anticipated the formal change will take place sometime m January or February. But he added Monday that the gentleman I met with today...their responsibility and goal is to make sure that they retain the good ZCMI customer. Theyre going to do what's necessary to do that. I do believe there will be great sensitivity to this market. That makes May Co. so strong. Each market is a different face He said he couldn't give specifics on whether such features as the Tiffin Room, a fixture at the Ogden and some other stores, would be retained, for example The Layton store is among the most profitable for ZCMI. "It is THE best increased store in the chain right now, definitely;' Haight said. "We're doing very, very well. I can tell you we have had double digit increases, now, and were still having good increases (even against a full year with the added space)! Some 40,000 square feet was added two years ago, both floors going to the east about 70 feet. Virtually every department saw more space after the expansion. With the addition, between 75 and 100 employees were added, bringing the total to about 300. The store is considered a Lev el 2 in the chain, putting it with Orem and South Towne. It is m a higher class than the Ogden store. A r, James Saunders responds to reader questions and concerns about fluoridation, p. B1 Dr. BY MEUNDA WILLIAMS Clipper Today Staff Writer There are more sites on the Internet for fluoride, both pro and con, than any person would likely ever care to look at. A good many of those sites tout fluoride as the most effective way to reduce the incidence of dental canes, especially in children, something area proponents point to as the greatest benefit of adding fluonde to the water system. for Utahns Dental Better Health in 10 health distnets, including Davis County, are working to place an initiative on the 2000 November General Election 66 studies m primary teeth and 86 studies m permanent teeth. Currently, only Brigham City, Helper and Hill Air Force Base have fluoridated water. Elsewhere, those who want fluoride treatments must get it at a dentist's office, applied topically or through a rinse, or get pills. And opponents say thats fine for those who thought want it. Meanwhile, hundreds of studies have been conducted in the past 50 years documenting the effectiveness of fluoride in decreasing the rates of dental canes, according to information released by the Amencan Dental Association, and most of the nation's water systems are fluoridated. In 1993, the results of 1 13 studies in 23 countries were compiled and analyzed, providing effectiveness data for Environmental Protection Agency, which link fluoride to bone cancer and an increase in hip fractures U.S. in the elderly. Proponents say that fluonde's toxicity is seen only in extremely high doses not the 1 part per million added in most water systems. Problems only arise when there are 6 or 7 parts per million," Rigby said. "Thats an incredibly strong dose and is seen only in areas it occurs naturally! Rigby said in those locales fluonde is removed from water. Information released at a recent - convention of the states dental hygienists shows an adult would have to drink 660 gallons of water fluoridated at 1 part per million in 24 hours to reach the lowest limit of a fatal dose. But opponents have seen problems anse m minimal doses, especially among those who have had a reaction to it. Dr. Eugene Peay, a Bountiful dentist, quit usmg fluonde in his practice because too many children got sick in his office after a fluoride treatment.
