The ceremony, to be conducted by Hans Chamberlain, chairman of the SUU Board ofT rustees, will fearure remarks by Louis Ulrich, partner and project architect; Qita Wooley, project coordinaror; SUUSA President Jason White; Library Director Diana Graff; and SU President Gerald R. Sherratt. Abo included in the ceremony are an address by Kay Mciff, a member of the Utah Board of Regents, and everal musical numbers by srudents from SUU's music department. An impres ive strucrure with a sliced cylinder reading room, the new UU Library will have four levels. The building will be approximately 80,000 square feet and will house more than 200 000 volumes and 1,100 student srudy stations. Forry-f. ur computer acces stations-with the capacity increase to O station if nece ary-will also be available for tudem use. A Large reading room with individual tables and carrels should combine with group study rooms for a variety of types of space for rudy. The building will have abour 11 rooms-which is nine more than the current building has-for larger groups of srudenrs ro collaborate on research projecrs or have group srudy. These rooms will vary in size from four to 10 occupants. Unlike the current building-where there are no windows at all, excluding the few as you enter the doors-there will be many windows in the new building to allow plenty of light ro enter. All of rhe srudy spaces will be positioned by the windows and the reading room will have an enormous window facing north. An acoustical engineer i also working to make the Library as noise free as possible. In addition, it will be handicapped accessible and will accommodate wheelchairs. According to Graff, trees, including special specimen trees and "grov s" similar to those on the upper campus, will surround the building. A "pedestrian plaza" will link the upper and lower campus and, Graff said, it will incorporate outdoor seating beneath ornamental trees. The new facility is an outcome of a 1988 statewide srudy of academic librarie commissioned by rhe Utah Legislarure. The study recommended library expansions at several campuses and a new library for SUU. After several years of study, planning and phased funding rhe state has now fully bonded the new $10.4 million structure. The construction schedule calls for completion of the building in the summer of I 995. The present Library was constructed in 1968 for an enrollment of 1,600 srudents. SUU enrolled nearly 5,000 students for fall quarter. The current library, however, now houses 180,000 volumes and seats only 320 srudents. According to Graff, 0 0ne of the questions most frequently asked by students is 'what will happen to the old Library?'" The university plans to renovate the existing Library into something called T echnopolis, a faculty office facility and computer/ technology center with interactive classrooms, open computer labs fo r srudents, media services and classrooms, Graff said. Following the lune demolition of Oak Hall (below), the onl:y f = camflus married housing, UU will begin building a vast new libTary in ill place tomorrow at the official gToundbTeaking ceremony.
