Show tr C. Evening concerts continue lassie western music will be served up by the Cowdaddies, a quartet of popular northern Utah performers, here Aug. 8 at SUU's Summer Evening Concert Series. The performance is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. in the Randall L. Jones Theatre. Admissions will be free. The follwing Sunday, piano music from such composers as Franz Josef Hadyn, Frederic Chopin and Johannes Brahms will be featured as Gail Niwa comes to the Randall Theatre. The Cowdaddies have been stalwarts on the state music scene for years. "This group has pledged itself to bring back the classic musical sounds heard on cattle drives and on the open range," said Marla Bingham, manager of the Summer Evening Concert Series for SUU's Lectures/Special Projects Office. "They'll be presenting songs reminiscent of such performers as the Sons of the Pioneers, Bob Wills and Oene Autry." The Cowdaddies will also perform from 2:303:30 p.m. Aug. 8 at the Iron County Rest Home in Parowan. 'We perform plays and sing at rest homes and senior citizen centers," explained Kennard Machol, who plays the fiddle and sings with the group. "They really seem to appreciate our presentations." In addition to Machol, who has won many fiddle contests and is a veteran performer with several groups, other Cowdaddies members include Rex Rinner, Craig Crowther and Harold Carr. Carr recites poetry and is regarded as one of Utah's finest bass players. Rinner, Machol and ( Crowther all slng. Flinner plays the guitar and banjo; Crowther is a singer-songwriter-poet who dabbles with the guitar. The Cowdaddies performances are jointly supported by a grant from the Utah Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. "Ms. Niwa was the grand prize winner of the 1991 Gina Bachauer International Piano Competition in Salt Lake City,~ said Bingham. •1t is also impressive that she is the first woman to win that prize and that she won two other awards in that competition, the 'Audience Award' and the 'Chamber Music Prize.'" As the Bachauer winner, she presented her New York City recital debut at Alice Tully hall in October 1991. She similarly gave her Kennedy Center debut as winner of the 1987 Washington International Competition.
