Show New conference formed D outhern Utah University announced July 15, its affiliation with a new NCAA Division I-AA athletic conference to be known as the American West Conference. SUU will ally with three California universities as charter members of the new cost-containment conference. Joining the university will be California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo, California State University at Northridge, and California State University at Sacramento. Additional universities located through the West are expected to join the conference in the next few years. SUU, with an enroltment nearing 5,000, is one of the four state universities in Utah and has served for the last three years as one of the leading NCAA independent programs in the nation. The University moved its athletic program to the NCAA Division I level in 1988, following decades of affiliation at the NAIA and NCAA Division II levels. Prior to its membership ·n the AWC, SUU had one of the top ranked independent programs in the nation In addition to its Western Football Conference affitiation In football. California State University at Northrldge is one of the four largest campuses of the California State University system of 20 institutions. With 30,000 students in attendance at CSUN, it ranks In the top two percent in enrollment in American higher education. It moved its athletic program to Division I two years ago after many successful years in DMslon II competition where it earned 30 national championships. California State University at Sacramento ts the fifth largest of the CSU campuses with an enrollment of 26,000. The university moved its baseball and softball programs to Division I in 1990, fourteen additional sports in 1991, and football to Division I-AA ranks this year. The conference geographically embraces northern, central and southern California and southern Utah. The origins of the AWC can be tmced back to the Western Football Conference, which was formed in 1982. All of the AWC's charter members participated in the WFC which came to an end when the new conference was formed. Unlike the former WFC, the AWC will Incorporate six areas of athletics. Beginning fall quarter, the men will enjoy conference competition in basketbaU, track and field and cross c;:ountry ~long with football. Women students will compete in basketball, cross counby, track and field, volleyball, and tennis, which incidentally will be SUU's first venture Into the sport. SUU will sit out volleyball In the Inaugural year.
