Participants are srudent5 enrering 11th and 12th grades who demonstrate excellence through academics, leadership, extra-curricular activity, personal achievement and community service. Subjects for the program range from personal development to intellectual discovery. A staff of eight people was chosen from 23 SUU student applicants to be counselors for the program. Julie Stuart, director, said the rest of her staff includes: Kristie Eliason, assistant director; Paul Bittmenn, recreation; Michael Broadhead, scheduling; Shane Clarie, ceremonies; Dave Heaton, scheduling; Mechelle Mellor, registration; Llsa Pearce, dining seYVices; Erika Timm, recreation and Cheris Tucker, oorrespondence. Elia.son said 50 srudents will attend this year. She said it's a "really fun program." The two weeks are very intense as participants live, talk, eat, and attend class together from seven in the morning until 12 midnight. She said it "opens minds to new thoughts." They (the counselors and speakers) try to "get students' minds to explode," she explained. Among the ta ks of the counselors is to coordinate the schedule and choose the speakers. Eliason said, "a lot of people outside the university wanted to be involved in the program," so many of the speaker positions were filled up quickly. Through the use of special speakers and faculty members, the main objective of the program is to give the srudents a college orientation. Other goals include giving participants a broader vision of personal potential for success; a keener ability to create, then implement new ideas; new approaches and skills in group dynamics; increased awareness of personal goals and objectives; and a better understanding of today's problems and how to deal with problems that will be faced by their generation. The Academy is co-sponsored by Utah's Governor Michael 0. Leavitt, and SUU. The governor will attend the closing ceremonies on July 22 . i! !ml f'mlMc:e Grapllla for Wladows 1rnmediat have 4hard and $CJCrcomput Ami Pro syrnant Norton Please News, 00 ; Opport $75 i i L...- ........--- . •".-I'fffiM'l6 .....,,.JlfClllwi lffll:11111 all111iclln al ..... .-•ll!e-.Dildr ..,.....,.
