Show ., . The Summerbird • July 6, !992 • Pa.ge 7 Classical guitarists slated for concert Classical guitarists Todd Woodbury and Tully Cathey will perform at a free concert July 12 at the Randall L. Jones Theatre on the Southern Utah University campus. The program, which will begin at 7 p.m., is the third in the University's Summer Evening Concert Series. It will feature music spanning over 400 years, from the Renaissance through the modern sounds of contemporary South American and Spanish composers. Both Woodbury and Cathey are educators as well as performers. Woodbury heads the classical guitar department at Weber State University and is also a faculty member at the University of Utah. Cathey is an instructor of music theory and harmony at the University of Utah. For over a decade Woodbury was a popular performer while he toured with Milton Jensen as the Jensen-Woodbury Duo. Currently he works with Cathey, a guitarist-composer, and guitarist· mandolinist Paul Binkley. Woodbury studied with Jose Duarte Coste at the Lisbon Conservatory in Portugal, Oscar Ghilgia at the Aspen Music Festiva~ George Sakellariou at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and Jose Luis Lopatigui at Cervera, Spain. Cathey graduated with honors from Mannes College of Music in New York, where he studied clasicaJ guitar performance with Leonid Bolotine and Eliot Fisk and composition with Robert Beaser and Charles Jones. H e was a member of the faculty at Mannes for four years, teaching theory and guitar while freelancing as a classical and jazz guitarist. His recent writing credits include original music for five documentaries for Salt Lake City's KUED 1V, the premiere of "Elements" by the Utah Symphony last July, and new logo and identification music for KUED's 1991-92 seasons. He is currently writing for mandolin quartet and vocal ensemble. Other upcoming July performances in the concert series include the Utah Pipe Band, July 19, and the Drinkall-Baker (piano and cello] Duo, July 26. Five programs are also scheduled during August in the series which runs each Sunday through Aug. 30. "We're doing it mainly for the Shakespearean Festival," he said. The late store hours will be perfect for festival company members to come in after performances, Sawyer added He said Dragon's Keep has the largest arcade in Cedar City, along with a large selection of role-playing games such as Dragon's Quest and Shadow Run. He notes that the store has a large area devoted to these games including a backroom. One has to be a member to play the role-playing games, and membership s:osts are $5 a month. However, Sawyer said if someone can prove employment with the fest ival, the games at midnight are free.
