Show Festival opens with • merriment he Utah Shakespearean Festival ushered in its 31st season June Z9 with a reception moved from the lawn co the Feaste Hall due co disrupting winds, and the opening night performance of William Shakespeare's beloved comedy, The MeTT) Wwes of Windsor. The season officially opened as Linda R. Lowe, chairman of the festival board of governors, welcomed the festival company members, patrons, and various special guests and dignitaries to the reception on the lawn near the Randall L Jones T heatre. Following Lowe's presentation were short remarks from Val Oveson, Lieutenant governor of Utah; Gerald R. Sherratt, president of Southern Utah University and Fred C Adams, festival founder and executive producer. Remarks centered on the growth and success of the festival, which began as a primarily local effort 31 years ago and has evolved into one of the largest and most criticallyacclaimed Shakespearean festivals in the world. Adams and Lowe also took time during the short reception to introduce the directors of this year's plays and to honor several individuals and c,rgamzations for significant contributions fo the festival. Mary E. Anker, a long-time festival volunteer; Jack and Jackie Sawyers, of Fiddler's Three Theatres; Gary Davis, recently retired from the SUU grounds department; Phillip Carter, SUL; associate provost for academic programs and dean of continuing education and summer school; and Sir John ful.staff (Roberc Machray) shows his affeaion for Mmress furd (Susan SUJerne,) m che Utah Shakespearean Fesnval produccion of 'The Merry Wives of Windsor,' directed ~ James }.
