Show UNIVERSITY JOURNAL ARTS !MONDAY, JULY 30; 2001 PACiE 91 Glimpses of southern Utah now at Braithwaite Gallery The thousands of visitors to southern Utah thi summer, as well as residents and neighbors, can enjoy authentic glimp es of life and landscape of the region at the outhem Utah Artists Invitational, on exhibit now thru Aug. 25 in the Braithwaite Fine Art Gallery at outhem tah University. Lydia Johnson director of the Gallery, say , "During the ummer season, in particular, it is wonderful to take the opportunity to provide visitors to Cedar City a glimp e of life in our region as seen through the eye of our local artists." This year, the 36 artists presenting at the Invitational are of all ages, backgronnds and artistic. disciplines, but have at least one thing in common: they love to depict their life and work in Utah territory south of Provo through art. Watercolors, oils, culptures, woodwork and textile design are just a sample of the work on display. Lovely pieces from Terrie Hammerschmidt's "Everyday Southern Utah Series" are part of the exhibit, including the pastels "Enterprise Hills," "Hurricane Mesa" and "Pinto." The enduring Bristlecone Pine, a cherished facet of southern Utah, is honored in Robert Warren's photograph and Arlene Braithwaite's pastel. Barbara Prestwich, too, offers scenes of typical southern Utah terrain and seasons, with her thoughtfuJ watercolors "The Camp House, " "Snow Canyon Driven " and ~ftemooo Repose ." And, David Nyman present a very personal view of his life tyle in southern Utah, with "Pete," a watercolor tarring a black cat, and "The Rocky Spot," another watercolor that prompts the viewer to question if this is another one of those hikes unique to southern Utah that Nyman finds particularly challenging. Jerry Anderson's sculpture certainly capture the eye, and the heart. "Lock, Stock and Barrer is of a mountain man and his bucking horse wrestling with a bear that has already stolen the man's gun. "Friends" is a charming and colorful tatue of a little girl haring her favorite stuffed ani~al. Mo t moving is Anderson' "Legacy," a· large sculpture of a ative American woman carving hieroglyphs wWle her male companion plays an instrument. Artist Uke Bob Higbee, Ruthanne Oliver, Lin Spangler, Mel Scott and Gregory Abbott, bring particularly dimensional variety to the exhibit. Higbee's "Rain Fore t" and "Desert Breeze" windchime designs are soothing to the eye and ear. Oliver's "Cougar" and "Egyptian" jackets are attention-grabbing fabrics. Spangler also executes art with fabric iQ. her very quaint "Sunflowers and Paintbrush" and "Evening Primrose." Scott's abstract watercolor "Polychromatic Vista" is a bright, intriguing piece. And, very thought-provoking, are Abbott's oversized mixed media art, "Llght," and his acrylic, "Venice." The youngest artist to present work in the Braithwaite exhibit is Dixon Leavitt, age 18. His profound oil-paintings are titled "The Wise Virgin" and "That ever Had I Seen So Great Courage." John$on ay that the ·level of this year's Invitational is very positive and effectual. "It's really interesting to see the artistic sensibilities in those around us," she comments. "I think it is fascinating to ee our region and our common experiences translated into very tunning works of art by such intere ting people we know as our neighbors and friends."
