Pa/mer had been acting as the interim head coach for the past two seasons. When he took overthe coaching duties before the 2000 season, Palmer was the youngest head coach in Division I baseball at the age of 25 . The decision to remove the interim label from Palmer's title was· made by Athletic Director Tom Doupre. ·we are pleased with the job that Kurt has done these past two seasons and are happy to name him full-time head coach,· Douple said.' ' He's done a great job under sometimes difficult circumstances. He has built a program that has been competitive in the MidContinent Conference and we've been a step away from the NCAA Regionals the last couple of years. We look forward to having him continue the winning tradition he's established with the program." Palmer is currently the winningest baseball coach since SUU became a Division I program . Under his guidance, the T-Birds 53-63, including a 35-20 MidContinent conference record _ In his first season coaching Palmer led SUU to a school record 30 wins, finishing the year 30-26. That was a 16-win turnaround from the 1999 season. This past season, the Thunderbirds fought through a tough non- conference schedule to a 23-37 overall record and finished second in the Mid-Con tournament. The 'Birds were one win away from receiving the school's firstever trip to the NCAA regionals _ "It's been a good two years for the program ." Palmer said. "I think we've made good progress, both academically and on th'e field . Our goal is to win the conference championship and hopefully we'll do that next season and go to Regionals ." Palmer returns two allMid-Continent Conference selections to led the 'Birds next year. Catcher Chris Nelson (5-8, 175; Salt Lake City, Utatl/Dixie College), was a first team selection. Nelson led the team in doubles with 11 and was second in the conference in batting at .398, including a .440 average in the MidCon. Nelson also had six home runs, 36 RBI , 56 runs scored, led the team in on base percentage (.541 ), and walks {28), and tied an SUU record for hit-by-pitches with 24 _ Pitcher James Anderson (6-2, 190; San Juan Capistrano, Calif./Saddleback JC), who also plays shortstop, was named to the second team . Anderson went 6-4 in 12 starts with three shutout wins. Anderson's Mid-Con record stood at 6-1 with an ERA of 3.50, holding opposing batters to a .267 average and allowing just 10 walks in 43.2 innings.
