Show u N I V E R s· I V ••••••• Nineteen beauties to vie for Miss SUU title BY ANDY BURT SENIOR STAFF WRITER The seaFch for the next Miss SUU is on, and it concludes Wednesday with the annual Miss SUU Pageant at 7 p.m . in the Auditorium. Kristen DeGraff. a senior chemistry major from Monroe, Utah, is the current Miss SUU. "Miss SUU is a young woman who will reign over the activities of Thunderweek. represent us at ti'le Miss Utah Pageant, and serve as Homecoming Queen in the fall of 2001 ." said D'EI Beatty, Miss SUU Pageant director. "It is one of SUU's most important traditions.• Last year, pageant coordinators deviated from tradition and chose to have the swimsuit portion of the program open to the public. This year. the swimsuit segment will remain open to the public, Beatty said. It will cost $1 to attend and is set for 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Aucfrtorium. The pageant is an official preliminary in the Miss America pageant system and is judged in the same manner. Contestants are judged in four categories. Forty percent of the score is based on talent, 30 percent on an interview, 15 percent on evening wear. and the 15 percent on physical fitness. An important part of the pageant, Beatty said, is the contestant's platform. which is required as part of the competiton. The platform consists of a set of issues for which the contestant proposes to be an advocate during her reign as Miss SUU. Nineteen women will vie for the title this year. "This is one of the most competitive years ever," Beatty said. "I think everyone who attends is going to be glad they came.· The contestants include the following: • Ensha · Adamson, a family and consumer science major from American Fork, Utah, selected higher education as her platform. Modem ballet is her talent. • Kristy Kae Anderson from Neola. Utah, has Kristen DeGraff a platform of early intervention for at-risk youth. She is a communication major and will play a classical piano piece. • Dawn Boyd is a chemistry major from Moab, Utah. Her platform issue is breast cancer and, for her talent. she will play the flute. • Shelly Ann Brown also has a platform of breast cancer awareness, She is from Riverton. Utah, and is an English major. For her talent. she will tap dance. • Nonie Cottam's platform issue is a · community of promise.· She is an elementary education major from St. George and will perform an Irish clogg for her talent. • Kristi Cox, a theatre major from Henderson, Nev .• is entering the competition with a pJatform of defense against sexual assaul She will perform a comedic D'EI Beatty monologue for the talent segment of the pageant. • Lexie Dance of Idaho Falls, Idaho, is an interior design major. Her platform 1s breast cancer awareness for young women. She will perform a jazz dance. • Gait Duncan of San Diego, Calif., has a platform issue addressing literacy. She is pursuing a double~major in musi<;; and communication . She will pesent a vocal performance. • Cherie Lowe's platform issue 1s depression seminars for young adults. She is a communication major from Roosevelt. Utah. Lowe's talent is ballet. • Amanda Leigh Matthews of Mapleton, Utah. has a platform issue of establishing a support group for youth that have weight and self-esteem problems. She is a music major and will perform a vocal solo from the light opera, Street Scene. • Ashfey McKell is an elementary educatidn major from Ferron, Utah, and has a platform dea6ng with youth safety. For her talent, she will play the piano. • Rachel Melander, has a platform ·of literacy and is from Spanish Fork, Utah, double majoring in education and dance.
