Most of the national sororities belong to the conference which is aimed at giving all sororities on any particular campus a better opportunity to promote themselves. Each campus has a Panhellenic presidency who oversees the activities and helps the girls with any questions they might have. · The women in the presidency have been through formal rush and know about the organizations. "They then run in their organization and their organization elects them." said Stacy Parr, a senior social science major from Las Vegas, Nev., and Panhellenic president. This year there are two members of Alpha Phi and two members from Zeta Tau Alpha. During rush week the members of the Panhellenic presidency are not allowed to tell which sorority they belong to or to promote any one sorority above another. "We are supposed to mediate between the sororities," Parr said. · we. are here to stop the competing and to make sure that everyone gets along." \Nithout it there would be a lot more fighting and competitiveness that is lessened by the Panhellenic organization, she said. Some of the rules enforced by the conference include a silence between the girls rushing and members of the sororities. This means that conversations are not allowed during the week, especially about rushing and the sororities. There is also no individual publicity. "We take care of it,· Parr said. On Thursday there is a strict silence between rushees and sorority members. This is to ensure there are no negative comments or rumors spread about any sorority. Delta Psi Omega, the local sorority is not a member of the Panhellenic Conference, so it doesn't follow the same rules. They can rush whenever they want, which is usually a separate week from Zeta Tau Alpha and Alpha Phi so they don't compete. . There is only a formal rush in the fall because the tum out is usually far less in the spring because most people are already settled into their activities and what they want to do. In the spring the Panhellenic rules still apply, however. Both sororities have rush type activities for recruitment and a balance is made between each organization.
