Moorty, professor of English literature, traveled through Europe this summer teaching students at the American University in Bulgaria and promoting his work and SUU at the International F. Scott Fitzgerald Conference in Nice, France. For the second consecutive year, Moorty was invited to the American University as a Balkan Scholar to teach a course ori Eastern Literature in Translation: Indian and Japanese. Each year the American University in Bulgaria invites two Balkan Scholars tq teach courses there. Moorty's class of seven Bulgarian and other Eastern European students was comprised of mathematics, business and computer science majors and only one English major. The university is located in Blagoevgrad, 65 miles south of Sofia, Bulgaria's capitol, and is associated with the University of Maine's liberal education department and is home to about 1,300 students and 65 faculty members. About half of the faculty are from the United States. On July 4, Moorty presented his paper "One Trip Abroad: A Voyage of Self-Discovery· to the Fifth International F. Scott Fitzgerald Conference in Nice, France. A copy Training leading to certification for prospective administrators in Utah's public schools will be offered for the first time at Southern Utah University beginning this fall. An SUU proposal to teach the program for supervisory leaders has been approved unanimously by the educator development committee, an advisory committee to the joint liaison committee of the Utah State Legislature. The training will be as a track within the university's existing master of education degree. With the approval, SUU joins the University of Utah , Utah State University, and Brigham Young University in offering training necessary for principals, assistant principals, superintendents, and other school supervisors. Students completing the master of education degree and required courses for the newly approved administrative/ supervisory certificate program will be eligible to apply to the Utah State Office of Education for certification to administer or supervise at kindergarten of Moorty's paper may be found in the faculty publications section of the Gerald R. Sherratt Library. Some 350 Fitzgerald scholars from around the world as well as Fitzgerald's granddaughters and his former secretary attended the conference. Moorty received full financial accommodations from SUU to attend the conference and submit his paper. He expressed extreme gratitude to the dean of the College of Humanities and Social ~ciences, Rod Decker, and his department chair, David Lee, for supporting his scholarly efforts. Moorty noted that attending these • conferences is beneficial to his students, in particular to him as a scholar and to the university as a whole. He believes that participating in conferences and taking part in such scholarly societal activities confers esteemed recognition upon SUU. In addition, it gives instructors the opportunity to offer a more valuable and fulfilling education to their students. "I am thinking of my students, and my scholarship, and how I will impart this information to my students [when attending such conferences]," said Moorty. This fall Moorty will teach English 4640, an in-depth senior seminar course on the works of Fitzgerald. S.S.
