The Joumal recently surveyed about 150 SUU students, asking them to cite their favorite movies, music, clothing and more. Several questions were also asked about their views of the university. Many students in different areas of the campus were surveyed. How do your favorites compare? · The number-one movie of the students surveyed was Top Gun, with 52 votes. Following in a close second with 46 votes was Princess Bride and Ferris Bueller's Day Off came in third with 23 votes. Several Adam Sandler movies. including Happy Gilmore, Billy Madison and Waterboy, also ranked high. Other movies mentioned more than once include Empire Records. While You Were Sleeping, Up Close and Personal, Star Wars and Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. Music preferences varied widely for SUU students. There were very few music groups mentioned which were repeated by other students. However, the general music genre that was reported was country. The second most popular type was the "Top 40" and alternative was the third, although most students included several types among their favorites. Garth Brooks received the most votes for favorite music group/artist, with only 19 votes. Students said other favorite artists and groups were Sarah Mclachlan, Dave Matthews Band, Limp Bizk1t. Puff Daddy, Willie Nelson, Alanis Morisette, Nirvana, U2. Metallica. CoUin Ray, Creed, Slayer. The Vandals, Jewel, Chicago, 'N Sync, The Eagles, Backstreet Boys, Blink 182. Foo Fighter.., Tori Amos, Beastie Boys, Barenaked Ladies, Beatles, Counting Crows, Depeche Mode and Ricky Martin, among many others. · Students who said they had a favorite article of clothing described a pair of jeans, faded "just right" and very worn. Mary Jenkins, a freshman undecided major from Sandy, said her favorite jeans are relaxed, faded, frayed and over-washed. They're her favorite pair because. i always have a good day when I wear them,· she said. Liz Frampton, a sophomore communicallon major from Grantsville. Utah. said her favorite clothing is pajamas because, "they're comfy." Most of the SUU students surveyed said they got their favorite clothing from department stores such as Nordstrom's, Gap, Christensen's and Old Navy. Most of the students had something positive to say about SUU. Vanessa Baldwin, a junior communication major from Tonopah, Nev.. said she likes the activities and sports to get involved with. Jenny Rasmussen, a junior communication major from Sandy, said she likes SUU because, "it's small and personable [and there are] tons of opportunities for hands-on experience.· Many SUU faculty members were reported to be these Music students' favorites. Of the people surveyed, 21 said they didn't have any favorite classes. which was the most of the negative responses in the whole survey. Most students said they liked college life, in general. The most common responses were that students liked the relaxed schedule, the availability to "party" and being away from home. [especially] the activities on campus. Emily Knapp, a junior English major from Salt Lake City, shows off her fetishes for the popular music group, Backstreet Boys, Ben Affleck, New Kids on the Block, The Brady Bunch and many other Hollywood stars in her apartment. Many students on campus have their own favorites of music groups, sports teams and actors which they display posters, photos and CDs proudly in their rooms. Top Gun,' starring Tom Cruise, ranked first in the survey recently taken of nearly 150 students, 'Princess Bride,' with Cary Elwes as Wesley and Robin Wright as Buttercup, was second and the movie that launched Matthew Broderick's career. 'Ferris Buel~er's Day Off' came in third. Sev~ral of Adam Sandler's movies such as 'Happy Gilmore' (right), 'Billy Madison' and 'Waterboy' were also hsted. Some other movies students said were their favorites included 'Empire Records, ' 'While You Were Sleeping,· 'Up Close and Personal,' 'Newsies,· 'Star Wars,' 'Contact,' and 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun. ' 'Star Wars,· is the only movie among SUU's favorite movies which is also among the top grossing films of all time. Only one student put the movie down as his favorite. · Garth Brooks (right) and Sarah McLachlan were the most mentioned music artists in the survey, although many music groups and artists were named.
