Show !MONDAY, JUNE 14,. 1999 PAGES UNIVERSITY JOURNAL CAMPUS MEWS Students learn the art of leadership Members of the Southern Utah University Student Government recently returned from the Utah Leadership Academy held in Logan, Utah, at Utah State University campus. Student governments from all over the state gather at the end of the school year to learn leadership skills and get ideas for the coming year. SUUSA President Kristian Olsen, a senior business management major from Blanding, was accompanied by12 other members of the newly elected student government. · As the students arrive, they are split into various groups according to their position in government. This gives each person a chance to network with others trying to do the same jobs at the other colleges. Olsen said this also gave them a chance to build relationships with students from other colleges. Vice President of Activities, Amber Petersen, a senior communication major from Murray, said there were many good ideas. SU students will have the opportunity to enjoy these new activities throughout the year. Academic Vice President Adam . Marchant, a senior communication major from Cedar City, said this was a great opportunity to learn some good leadership skills. "We all gleaned something from the knowledge of others while we were there," Marchant said. Everybody in student government is new to the group. alt was a good opportunity for us to bond during the eight-hour van ride to Logan," said Olsen. When the ride was over, they would either leave the van loving or hating each other. Fortunately, hate was nowhere to be found. Jep Enck, a nationally renowned lecturer, talked to the various student Adam Marchant, Amber Peterson and Kris Olsen leaders about how to trust. Enck said their annual student leadership conference. We are able to rent to students who are married · or have children. that everybody needs to work together and should not compete. If you compete, you cannot improve others. Enck also said that fun is going to be the new "P' word of the new millennium. "And that is what we had, a lot of fun," said Marchant. The student government wants to make sure students have better access to what is going on. Marchant said there is a new broadcast manager that will keep students better informed by working closer with Power 91 and SUUTV. "This year, students can't help but know what is going on," said Marchant. Petersen said that the president's committee will be a life line to the students. Plans are to walk through student housing once a month and let everybody know what is going on for that month. "We want to combine the efforts of all student leaders including clubs and organizations," said Petersen. The students need to have the opportunity to participate in as many activities as possible while here, and to make sure that happens, Petersen plans on ~~.rrn working with the LOS Institute of Religion to make sure activities will not conflict. To start the summer block off to a good start, Petersen announced there will be an Ice Cream Social on the .......~ L J_ __ . , lower quad Wednesday at 7 p.m . This will be the first of several activities planned for the summer. Petersen said that students can look forward to at least one outdoor movie and a couple of dances. "Know thyself, you can't lead others if you can't lead yourself,"said Olsen.
