SUU Dean of Performing and Visual Arts Charles L. Metten as Coach Van Buren, Michael Harding as Smokey, Paul Hope as Rocky and Dave McNamara as Shohovik in the Utah Shakespearean Festival's production of 'Damn Yankees.' Dean/Coach has a lotta heart If there is one thing actor, director, teacher,·and dean Charles L. Metten has, it's heart; and so it only seems titting that he should be spending his summer belting out "You Gotta Have Heart'' in the Utah Shakespearean Festival's 1999 summer musical, Damn Yankees. After several years as a celebrity along the Wasatch Front, Metten has temporarily moved south and is making his stamp on Southern Utah University and the Utah Shakespearean Festival. In 1998, Mellen was asked to become the dean of SUU's new Colfege of Performing and Visual Arts, which includes the Festival. It wasn't long before he was invited to share his talent and experience as an actor on the 1999 Festl\lal stage ---~~-------- as Coach Van Buren in Damn Yankees. Metten said he jumped at the chance for several reasons, one being his belief that he should continue to use his skills as a performer. So Metten divides his day between his responsibilities as dean and singing and dancing in four hour-long rehearsals for Damn Yankees. "It all ties in with what the college is. All the faculty of the college either paint, perform, sing, play musical instruments or dance. It's really important we do as well as teach," said Metten. "Everybody is involved in doing; and so I jumped at the chance."
