The popular opera was. directed by Carol Ana Modesitt, as ociate professor of mu ·jc and conducted by Philip R. Baldwin, assistant professor and director of orche tra at .su . The Marriage of Figaro, is the story of Figaro, valet to Count Almaviva, played by teven Mortier and u anna , maid of the Counce Almaviva, played by Kara F. Barney . u anna and Figaro are to he married , hue the Coun_t, pfayed by Dave Bone , has eyes for u anna. Enter Dr . Bartolo , played by Michael Win low , and Marcellina, played by Joan Riddle, who al o desires to breakup the wedding. Maccllina want to marry Figaro , whom ·he later find out is _her son by a cry t with Dr. Bartolo . There i Chcdrubino , the count 's page, played hy Jennifer Klomp, whom the aunt has found with Barbarina , the gardener ' s daughter, played hy Anna R. Hughe · . The Count i after Barharina as well, so . he sends Cherubino off to a new life in th army . The Countess , played hy . handa Caldwell , is up el ahout h r hu hand 's lo of love , so wiLh the help of usanna and Figaro she plots to make him jealous. Figaro i ummoncd to c urt , which pica cs the ount. At court , u anna set up a meeting with the Count and give him a letter during her wedding festivities. The secret meeting is to take place in the garden, Susanna and the Countess arrive dre ed in each other ' s clothes. The Count a r rive thinking his wife is Susanna; they hide as Figaro arrives. Figaro has now figured that usanna is dres ed a the Counte s so he begins to woo her. Su anna hit' him thinking he truly loves the Countess. Figaro tells her that he knew it was her. The Count is angry, chinking that Figaro is having his way with the Counte . The Countess reveals herself, and they all lived happily ever ft r. It sounds like an 18th century soap opera to me. The entire production was well put together , organized and creative . The singers had wonderful stage pre cnec and cemed to enjoy the roles they were playing . The e will be voice to I ok forward to hearing in futur productions . The et and costumes were fun and beautiful. The story was hard to follow in some parts, as the voices would fade out below Lhe music. The Orche tra , which is often overlooked because its members are not on stage , played wonderfully. - The production was a tremendous succe s for the music department and the College of Performing and Visual Art . Hats off to the entire production of 11ze Marriage of Figaro. 1he Marriage of Figaro ran March 22 , 24, 25 and 27 . · Getting to the top of the cotporate ladder without following the traditional teps is the topic of the fina l production of the academic ye·ar to he pre ented hy outhem Utah University' department of theatre arts and fance . How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying, a musical presentation, will open a threeweekend run April 15 at the SUU Auditorium . Performance date are April 15-17, 21-~ , and 28-May 1. urtain time i 7 :30 p.m. each night. An April 17 matinee , tarting at 2 p .m ., is al o cheduled. "This is a wonderfully fun how, appropriate for everyone in just about any family ," Valeen Archibald, director, explains. " It offc u an opportunity to laugh at some of the absurdities of big business and at our elve for how erious we allow me U1ings to become." Bradlee kinner, a ophomore from Richfield , is J. Pierrepont Finch, in the play. Finch "works " his way to the upper echelons of the World Wide Wicket Manufacturing finn by following the instruction pre ented in a book titled "How to uccced in Business Without Really Trying." Ro emary, played by Melinda Pfun tein, a senior from La Vegas (las Vegas H.S.), Nev., is the giddy and naive girl who faithfully stand · by Finch's side. Other major roles are played hy Melanie Harding, fre hm an, Cedar City; Aron hanley, senior, La Vegas (Cimarron HS) , Nev.; and Franci. Tau'a, jun ior, Maui, Hawaii. Harding is Hedy LaRue, hanley plays Bud Fru~p. and Tau 'a i J.B. Biggley, who stands at the top of the corporation. " ix wonderful song are packed into this production ,• Archibald explains . "Included are 'Coffee Break ,' ' Brotherhood of Man ,'' I 8 ·lievc in You ,' and ' Rosemary 's Love ong. · I think our audience will really like the mu ic. Mu ic and lyrics arc by Frank Laesser." The etting is inside the WWW Manufacturing firm during the 1950s. The set is largely onedimen ional , with "colorful and fun co tume . It is all intended to he very 'pre entational,'" Archibald aid. "The tory line comically represents our warping of the American dream: gening something for nothing. Finch u e guile to climb to the top after neither hard work nor other traditional meth ds hring success.
