" * , , i, ,,,,,,,,, Prejudice is Convo topic Prejudicial behavior and how that behavior is fostered and practiced will be explored at tomorrow's Convocation Series presentation. Jane Elliott, a former teacher who has gained national attention through the creation and adaptation of a discrimination experiment called "Blue Eyes, Brown Eyes," will speak at the 11 a.m. program in the SUU Auditorium. Her topic is II Anatomy of Prejudice." The experiment began in a third grade class taught by Elliott in Riceville, Iowa, an allwhite, all-Christian community, The exercise explores feeli ngs and outcomes when participants are labeled inferior or superior based solely on the color of their eyes. It has been repeated throughout the country with children and adults participating. "Ms. Elliott maintains that a person born, raised, and socialized in America has been conditioned to be racist," Lana Johnson, di,rector of SUU's lectures/ special projects office, said. "She says that people are different and have a right to those differences. She also thinks that racism in the United States could end in one generation, if we wanted it to. She will certainly offer ideas that will fuel thought and discussion." Among the several television documentaries covering Elliott's work are ABC's "The Eye of the Storm," which won the Peabody Award; PBS's "A Class Divided," which was broadcast nationally on the network's Frontline series; and Florida Public Television's "The Eye of the Beholder," which dealt with adults and their reactions to discrimination. "A Class Divided," and "The Eye of the Beholder" were each Emmy Award winners. Elliott was selected a "Person of the Week" by ABC-TV's Peter Jennings. She is also a recipient of the National Mental Health Association's Award for Excellence in Education. Elliott has been a guest lecturer at colleges and universities, civic service organizations, and corporations and businesses nationwide.
