"This will be our 12th annual conference," Jane Comp, assistant director of conference services at SUU, said. "Our overall theme is 'connecting with children,' and we stress learning concepts that will enrich the whole child: emotional, social, intellectual, physical, and spiritual. Registration forms for the conference, which offers two quarter hours of credit, are available through SUU Conference Services, Connecting With ChiJdren, 35 I W. Center Cedar City, UT 84720. Forms may also be obtained by phoning 80 1-8658 196. The conference costs $130 for registration prior to July 1, and $140 after July 1. "This has been a very popular conference for elementary teachers and administrators, coordinators and teaching staff of Head Start programs, chi ld and homecare providers, preschool teachers, college students, and parents," Comp said. "We feel that our speakers and topics this year will be relevant, interesting, and va luable. Two conference 'strands' are included, one for those interested in preschool and kindergarten and one for those involved with grades one through three." An exchange of "never fai l" ideas/ materials for each of the strands is a part of the conference. 11 Keynote addresses are scheduled at 9 a.m. each day of the conference in the R. Haze Hunter Conference Center on the SUU campus. Dr. Karen C. Smith, a recipient of the 1990 Presidential Award for excellence in mathematics teaching, will speak July 8. Lois Burdett, who has published four children's books, become a regular guest on major television networks, and been presented numerous national awards, will present the July 9 address. Smith will discuss "Developmentally Appropriate Assessment: A Contradiction in Terms" in her keynote address. She will later make a presentation on "Developmentally Appropriate Math" Burdett, a second/third grade teacher from Canada who has gained national attention for children's Shakespeare productions, will speak on "Shakespeare Can Be Fun: Integrating Shakespeare Across the Curriculum." Other guest presenters will speak on topics relating to stress, owning and operating a preschool, matching curriculum to student needs, emergent literacy, geology for elementary teachers, chil.drcn's IQ and achievement test software, web page creation, music applications, appreciating diversity, art, and idea sharing. Sponsors of the confe rence are the SUU Office of Conference Services, Child Development Faculty, and College of Education. Four new members will join the SUU Board of Trustees Aug. 8 at the board's next regular meeting. The four wi ll each be replacing trustees whose terms have expired. N ew trustees appointed by Governor Michael 0. Leavitt and confirmed by the State Senate arc Alice Ritter Burns, Cedar City, and Henry-B. Eyring Jr., North Salt Lake. Burns is the city attorney for Cedar City Corporation, and Eyring is a consultant with Monitor Company, a management consulting firm based in Cambridge, Mass. The other two new board members fill ex officio seat s. Stephen C. Allen, Monticello, serves by virtue of hi s position as president of the SUU Student Association; and David Moody, Las Vegas, is president of the university's alumni associa ti on. Burns replaces Sharon Isom, St. George, on the l 0-me mbcr board; and Eyring is fi lling a position left vacant by R. Don Cash, Salt Lake City. Vaughn McDonald, Cedar City, is the outgoi ng alum ni associati on prcsiden.t . Last year's student body president was Valarie O lson. Allen is a senior majoring in communica tion at SUU. He was elected student body pres ident this spring. Bums has served seve n years as Cc.dar City at_torney, worked as a partner in a private Cedar City general practice, and served an internship with the international trade law branch of the United N ations in Austria . Eyring serves as president of Monitor Institute, a Monitor subsidiary firm that consults in the public sector. Monitor is developing the business plan for the Western Governors' University. He is also chief operating officer of the Huntsman Cancer Institute. Moody is a senior vice president for real estate for the Commercial Bank of Nevada in Las Vegas. He has also served in management positi ons at Bank West and Nevada Community Bank in Nevada and First Securit y Bank in Utah . Burns and Eyring were each appointed to se rve until 2001.
