He said The control of science must come from some other place than science namely the philosophical and theological spheres. There are three spheres of human knowledge science, religion For each of these spheres there remain questions The questions science cannot answer are the basic and practical ones. Each sphere has a competence, but a limited compentence in solving problems Each sphere has certain traits which limit the competence of the inquirer. Science is limited to answering questions by investigation, but some important questions cannot be answered solely by investigation These are such basic questions as the nature of the niind, the nature of God, of Knowledge, virtue, mans duties and many other goals of life. The simplest of experiences provides the basic data for philosophical inquiry The philosopher needs no special data. He uses reason and analysis, and he uses them in a different manner than does the scientist. The difference between science and philosophy is the philosophical question itself. A question that cannot be answered by empirical investigation. If there is no difference between natural and supernatural knowledge, there is no religion. For a man of true faith cant prove his faith. If he could he wouldnt need faith. And the practical use of religion is as a vehicle to aid mans efforts for betterment. The truths of philosophy and religion are more important than those which science has ever learned. Dr. Adler had a big part in shaping the great books of the Western World I heartily recommend that readers of this column go to the Ogden City Public Library and browse through this set of 54 volumes. The set was given to the library, by a generous donner, whic hcost $500 unless it was purchased at the founders course of pre publication price of $340. Here is an study, just for the effort.
