From the , A Outoiiijn consSJer ibli tow.iril M n- -r 1 ahoiitio-h licinre lltd Jeep nt- - uf tlm on tho North Shore, we, t te'l of g'lil have taken some trouble u gel ut the real fact. For much of the infnrinitioii we are l to Mr. John Melvetinr. who, a in.uiy of otir readers are aware, fs one of the four brothc rs wlm were the first In'h-btft- Jo discover and locate the veins. They were also the First discoverers of the silver bearing veins of the North Shore, ind rn.iiiy of the best discoveries made since the oiiginat ones wore by or through them. The MeKelbtr boys and their family have resided for many years in Ontonagon, and are well known; so that their statements are perfectly reliable. The veins dLcovrred l.y them are in wbat is known as the Luke Shabond-awa- n country, and is about seventv-eig! bt miles from Irincc Arthurs Landing on Thunder B.v, Lake Superior, which is the m.tin town or settlement in the Silver l'istriet of the North Shore. Lake Shabondawnn is an inland lake, is about thirty mile.1) long, and from one 3o five miles wide, and is on the route stsed to trjvel to the Jled River country, by the Canadian tropps nnd emigrants. t It is reached by about milts of travel over the Government road from the of Lake Superior, and is a splendid gravel road, superior to the government roads generally built on the A nveriean side. ; On the lake is a small steamer, whirh transports freight, passengers, etc., to the terminus of the road to the weal, which commences on the western rnd of the lake, making a portage across miles. It the lake of about twenty-liv- e is on the western end nnd north shore of the lake wberp the gold discoveries have licen made. The veins are composed of quartz, much of which is decomposed, and btryites of heavy spar, nnd carry galena which of itself contains considerable silver ; silver1 glance, very pure ; iron pyrites (sulphuret of iron) nnd free or pure gold. The general course of the veins is cast nnd west, and dip toward the morth, They are inclosed hi walls of slate, the mnth beconsiderable magnetic ing a slate iron in it, while the south wall is a slate. The veins are very repulvr and well defined, and were traced by Mr. Mtlvtllnr for several miles. Some of the sand was examined in the strevmv, and found to contain gold, but whether in paying j quantities or not they were not prepared to test, as their principal business was to trace and follow np the veins already discovered. The country is very! wild and broken up, ami is what is known ns the hight of land, where the waters run toward Hudson Bay to the north and Lak Supjrior to the south, and consist principally of a series of ridges and mountains of granite, with but little timber or soil to make it an inviting spot for a habitation, or to produce much towards sustaining mankind. Under thc.se circumstances we would warn partiis not to be hasty in rushing ,to that section at present. Wait until Spring or Summer, when the mow is off the ground, and further developments made. We sec exaggerated reports circulating all over the country! of men washing suit from ten to twenty dollars worth of gold per day. These are not substantiated ty Mr. McKellar, alt hough he is from the district. Tie season just fresh advanced now to do much to is too far wards developing the Value ol the veins, but in the Spring they will be fully by a strong Atwricaa c impany, rooi-tiu- g of Captain Frue, A. II. filler and other well known Lake Superior men, which of ite!f, is( a eutlicieut guarare tio bum-liR- g, antee that the but a veritable reality.' For several year reports have been imvlafe-- that the Indians knew of both gold and stiver back in (be interior of tb coantrv; but th McKellar were the fir--t white men thht ventured out to them belong not for it. and-f- o only the boner, but wy hej a rich reward for t Lclr trouble , forty-eigh- ea-tf- ru YOLJ The Ogden tin mines have latterly been the subject of much derisive comment by assay-erchemists and experts, not only in that section, but also at Washington aud Philadelphia. Their judgment, iitmever, in the matter is rendered of little importance by this newly discovered metal being now pronoutiyed, by those who are supnosed to know, to be cadmium instead of tin. Should the mineral deposit prove to be really cadmium, it is considerably more valuable than if it were really eommon tin, for cadmium i a rare uud Its great costly metal. rarity, it Js true, enhances its cost, yet if it is found in extensive deposits and considerable abundance, it can be usel for precisely the same purposes as tin, and i even more desirable than that useful metal. It takes a high poll !i, does not oxidte, is ductile, aud easily worked or fused. Tin tuiucs are good enough in their way, and will do for other countries, but mines of cadmium are much more worth having. Let the experts laugh at the Ogden 'tin" all they like. T bey 'll not laugh at cadmium. If this new phase of the Ogden i only correct, it is of I lie greatestof!importance to the mining inthe whole country, ami is ail ti rests important addition to the numerous valuable mineral deposits already found to exist within the vast borders of Uncle Sams dominions.
