Show X i year as to forward are looking people new year, and assessing the old, and since it has become popular to record for poster-bit of our times in a I though we time capsule a few items-foassemble might one of our otn. We ought to include some luau food, or a lei. for our 50th state, or perhaps a Hawaiian record. The islands have definitely affected our way of living in the Mountain West. We ought to enclose some literature about the vaults carved into the mountains that ere open for a white this fall to the public, for the record keeping of the LDS riiurch. Also, we should have a bro- chure included showing the do-elopmont of Park City as a recreation and vacation resort. It would be difficult to enclose a condominium apartment house; 63 has been the year for these. We'll probably bare to settle for a picture and explanation of this. It would be wise, too. to show the growth in population, business, churches, and residences in 1963, for the suburbs continue to change in the '60s. Wed certainly have to insert folk tune particularly one jof the ones no one had heard Jie-fo- r that is so pqjndar because ertainly 1963 was the hootenanny year. And. of course, the Barbie doll that symbol of '63 would have to be included It scarcely respresent my idea of a doll not a grown image of a teen ager. But include the doll. Cost vie! There were a lot of wonderin '63, ful things happening some not so good but '64 can be better. We have only to will that way. It is up to us. At this time of the a higher than last year. The county is growing in assessed valuation. This growth must and -- we speak advisedly must, provide enough revenue to carry its own weight, to provide the " j. ditional policemen and firemen who. are needed. ' f The maximum tax rate increase should be only the ItT- - exact amount necessary- to meet the bond obligations which - the people have voted-- no more. . A record crowd took time off Friday to advise the mission that the people do not want a budget that-i- s $2 million (almost) higher than last year, that they do not want the extra services that commissioners so pridefully b'oast of, that they- - think the county government is becom-- ing more and more wasteful of taxpayers money. Most of the citizens attending budget hearings who praise the budget and compliment the commissioners are those who are working for special interests. Their pet a new' park, additional roads, or special benefits for a particular area, have been' written into the new budget, and they do not .wish to have it disturbed. Many of these things are good, they are neqessarv, and they must be paid for. but only out of the natural increase in revenue from the growth in assessed valuation, . tax rate. not from an Utah Taxpayers Association, through its spokesman. Dr. M. Hyrum Harris, advocates consolidation of county and city governments as a means of achieving economy. This is pure fallacy. It has been tried again and again, and results only in higher costs and more waste. Dr. Harris ad-y.- -- com-"C- T ' ever-increasi- " ( Temple Rites Unite Couple knows this. There is no call for a higher tax rate, and the county commissioners should adopt a budget streamlined accordingly. Taxes have doubled while the population has increased The commissioners can see, as well as ordinary- citizens, that this trend must be stopped. one-thir- Annual Alien Report Due Officer in charge, Joe D. Low-riImmigration and Naturalization Service office, of Salt e. Lake City, staged that during the coming month of January aliens will be required to submit the Annual .Address Report. All aliens, with few exceptions, who are in the' United States on Jan. 1 of each year must report their address before the end of the month. The following classes are exempt from this requirement: (1) Accredited Diplomates; (2) Persons accredited to certain international organizations; and (3) those admitted temporarily as agricultural laborers. There are several hundred im'migrant and naturalization offices in the United States, but, as these may he far distant from the homes of some who ate required to report, the Post Office Department, with, offices it; every city, towiusmd village, is generously cooperating in making the report forms, available at their offices. Mr Lowrie also advised that the law provides penalties for failure to comply with the reporting requirement. Couple Makes Plans For. March Wedding ,Miss Nancy daughter Curt-is- , JMrs Cyril II. BLANK ENTRY -- Gifts Presented By Vivi -- . Parly Held; Last Word . It is time far the Salt Lalce County Commission to consider the taxpayers .instead of rouitty officials and employes when the vote is taken on the county budget. officials elective and County appointive are interested mo inly in entrenching themselves, raising the budget and their own salaries, and making their positions more and more Leis face it. No county official .is interested in reducing the budget of his own department, because that would mean fewer employes and a consequent lessening (political patronage and a decreasing number of votes at election time. Officials want' more, not fewer employes, and a raise for them every year so that they and their families and friends will remain staunch and faithful voters come election time. If the county commission, in adopting its budget, is so blind or. so politically endebted that the commissioners approve these annual requests for larger and larger budgets, then we need neVT commissioners. 1 But if the commissioners listen to the public, if they free themselves from the bonds of political dependency, if they vote independently and according to the good judgment they possess, the budget will be held to a figure no 14 - Page 2 I E Mid- JN 255-355- .
