This will be the United States 200th birthday. Dr. Elliot Morris, an astro geologist for the U. S. Geological Survey Department announced that the "Viking Spacecraft" will set down on Mars three years from now. Dr. Morris appeared in the Salt Lake City Library July 2nd before about 75 Salt Lake children to discuss Mars and our future with this our sister planet. He also showed slides that were taken by previous Mars shots. Dr. Morris explained that up until about ten years ago not much was known about this planet that sets next to our earth. This was mainly because technology had only advanced as far as looking at the planet through a telescope. The reddish colored planet with its light and dark markings that would change with the seasons was thought to be the home of growing plants and maybe even animals. Many people thought that the large canals found running across the planet were some sort of irrigation ditchs dug to carry water from the vast polar caps found on Mars. Well, in 1964, the U. S. sent Mariner 4 past Mars for the purpose of taking pictures of this planet at a closer distance. Only about 27 pictures were taken of areas of the planet that covered 600 to 1,000 miles. It was found at that time crators much like our moon. In 1969, the U. S. sent Mariner 8 and 9 to Mars to orbit around for even more pictures. Mariner 8 failed and fell to earth while Mariner 9 arrived just in time to take pictures of one of the worst dust storms we know to to have .existed on Mars. After the dust .subsided many of the best pictures of Mars were taken. These pictures reveled some of the largest volcanos in the solar system, giant sand dunes and enormous canyons. There is no water on Mars and one would have a hard time existing there. Because of the thin atmosphere of carbon dioxide and the distance from the sun it is only about half as light there as it is on earth. Mars has two moons, one circling its surface twice in 24 hours. The Russians reportedly landed an unmanned space craft in 1971 on Mars for the purpose of taking pictures. This craft landed during this fantastic dust storm and thus was not able to send back any photographs of the surface. Our 200th birthday maybe celebrated in the United States by our first soft landing of an unmanned space craft on the surface of this sister planet. Dr. Morris said that it just worked out that the very best time to send a craft for this purpose would be around that time and since we are going to be that close, what better way could be found to celebrate the birthday of thaTJnited States than to land on Mars? |
