Show C Si CAM OF OUR EXCHANGES fnd General Territorial News, Culled and Leamington Gets "Looney An interesting episode that occurred about two weeks ago down at Learning-tohas just come to The Blades attention by meeting a gentleman from the Smelter town. About two week? ago, Receiver Wo. H. Humphries of the Ibex Co., went down to pay off the men for the week. After getting their pay the men threw down their tools and refused to work ,any (longer unless the amounts due them for April were paid. Mr. Humphries could promise them nothing deflnateiy, and the men became noisy and threatening and gave the Receiver to understand if they were not 21 hours, jthey would shut paid within down. The men took sides the smelter and a fight was narrowly avoided. Mr, Humphries was, however, in a box and telegraphed the situation to Mr. Underwood in New York, who wired the Receiver that'the men would be paid in 35 days, which will bring the limit on and Aug. 2d. That satisfied the men, they returned to work. Daring 21 hours of the negotiation the furnace ws fed just enough to keep it alive. The out' come will be. watched with Interest. n, plain severity of more primitive eras, have been brought about so quietly as to have scarcely made their presence felt. The greatest transformation Ihe history of the nineteenth century shows is the improvement in the condition of the common people, accomplished, not by bloodshed, or even threats of war, without menace of revolution and almost oblivious of the existence of law. ijortland Oregonian.
