Four win photography, writing awards in state competition Two BY High students received superior ratings and two received merit ratings at a sportswriters and photographers clinic held at the University of Utah. Reed Smoot earned his rating on a sports action picture, and Bruce Bammes received a merit rating for his entry. Both are seniors. Of more than 800 students participating, only seven received the annual All-Sta- te a gold medal. Only the top seven were announced at the competition, while other awards will be announced later. Jim, along with the six others, appeared on television last Sunday to explain a little about their works and art activities. In conjunction with this competition, the art classes from-BHigh took a field trip to the exhibit in Salt Lake City on Wednesday, under the direction of Mr. Laine Raty, art instructor. . BY Highs track team will host Orem and P. G. this afternoon at 3:45 in the BYU Stadium after winning last weeks triangular meet against Payson and Lehi. The baseball and tennis team will play at Spanish Fork on Tuesday and host American Fork on Thursday. Wildcats win first track meet of season with Payson, Lehi ground. In a practice game with Springville last week the Wildcat baseball team was ahead 1 at the end of three innings when the game was called because of inclement weather. With the season so young and with so few practices, coaches claim that it is difficult to tell just how BY High will end in region competition. Coaches are Jed Gibson for track, Courtney Leishman for baseball, and Joe Dilworth for tennis. 4-- Wilde nabbed first place in both the high hurdles and the shot put. BY won nine of the 16 events. In the first track meet of the year, BY High defeated Pay-so- n and Lehi at the BYU stadium, nabbing 72 i points compared with 67 h for Payson and 20 for Lehi. It was stopped to give the faculty and administration a chance to study the strong and weak points of the program, according to Mr. Wallace Allred, assistant principal. Apparently in holding with the theme, the seniors are still unable to determine how it will turn out. The participating seniors will exceed the number active in any of the assemblies to date. Nearly two thirds of the class will take part. Advisors Miss Donna Turley and Mr. Gary Penrod are working with Carol Babcock, director, in the production of the assembly. The program is a series of scenes throughout history depicting special events in each period of time. library sells varied paperbacks BY During the past few weeks, the BY High Library has officially gone into the paperback selling business. The new program, instituted in connection with the BYU Bookstore, provides opportunity for students to order and purchase almost any book. The new prgram is existing on a trial basis, according to Miss June Berry, librarian. Its success and continuation will depend on student support. s Chorus readies spring sings This Sunday the Concert Chorus, under the direction of Mr. Fred Webb, will perform at the Park Ward in Provo. The Chorus will provide the bulk of the program. A similar program was pre- sented on March 21 at the Provo 12th Ward.
