Platter Chatter by Steve Carter In as much as this is the first Platter Chatter chat, I would like to start off comparing two of the most prominent yearly jazz polls, those two being the Sixth Annual International Jazz Critics Poll published by Down-Bea- t Magazine and the First Annual Play Boy Jazz Poll, both for the year 1958. First let's take the Big Bands. Duke Ellington took top honors in Down Beat and Stan Kenton in Play Boy. Kenton, whom I think is one of the best, was rated rather low in Down Beat's poll. As far as combos and small groups go, the Modern Jazz the Quartet won Down Beat andover Dave Brubeck Quartet won all in Play Boy. In the old standby group the following took top honors in both paces: Trombone, J. J. Johnson; Tenor Sax, Stan Getz; Baritone Sax, Gerry Mulligan; Female Singer, Ella Fitzgerald; and Ray Brown on Bass, who incidentally came from below fourth place in all polls last year. In Clarinet, Tony Scott won in Down Beat and good old Benny Goodman in Play Boy. On the Ivorys, Thelonius Monk, capa relatively new in honors tured first place piano Down Beat, and Dave Brubeck for Play Boy. Freddie Green, of the Count Basie Band, edged Tal Farlow from the Guitar title in Down Beat. In Play Boy, Barbox-beate- r, ney Kessel took top honors. Beating the skins for top position in Down Beat was Max Roach with Shelly Manne close behind and also winning the Play Boy poll. Milt Jackson and Lionel Hampton were caught throwing mallets at their vibes for Down Beat and Play Boy respectively. The and Play Boy respectively. Here is some welcome news that I'm sure will interest some of the students at B.Y.H. (maybe even some of the faculty, one Im sure of). Stan Kenton will play for the B.Y.U. Winter Carnival on February 6 and 7. In addition to this, Kenton will play a free jazz concert on Feb. 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. |
