Show Page YMd 4 Jan. 30, 1959 Cat prmn Wildcats Bow To Cavemen E h E P m P P P P American Fork High School S. in what defeated turned out to be a thrilling contest from start to finish last weekend in the A F. gym. 46-4- I 4 Led by Phil Reed, Sterling Harris and the fine floor play of Pete Scholes, tTie Cavemen led throughout the first half, with most of their scoring coming from the foul line. The score at 7 for A.F. The halftime was Wildcats never quit as the final score might indicate. They were down as much as 9 points in the second period but rallied back on the jump shots of Gary Rose who was the only Wildcat who could get the ball through the hoop consistently The Cats started the second half with a bang as they hit two straight field goals to tie the game at 21 all The lead then went to American Fork and staved that way until the Cats reon Wayne took the lead 29-3in shot the fourth foul Nelsons twice lead The changed period. more with Reed and Ron Van Wagenen trading shots. Harris then put the Cavemen, in front to stay with a jumper' from the key. Scholes went all the way for a score and Dennis Durf6y hit a jumper underneath for the win. Gary Rose was high for the Cats with 14 Wayne Nelson played a great game on the boards and on stopping Phil Reed, the big AF center. The are waiting for a return shot at the Cavemen in the Fieldhouse. 8 Nelson' Rose Spark Victory After a slow first quarter, the Wildcats came- into their own at Tintic. Dave Atherley of the Min- ers kept firing away, but with some steady rebounding the Wildcats pulled a 27 to 20 half- time advantage. In the third quarter Cliff Pierpont picked up his fourth and had to sit out most of the final quarter But although - Sports Mirror with Cliff K, 21-1- -- w Matmen Prime For Region Foes Coach Frank- - Thompson has been working out his wrestling squad very hard in order to round them into shape for their region meets. They have had n meets in which three Coach Thompson has had a chance to see all of his boys in action and he has an idea of what each one can do. In talking to Thompson he states, We are lacking in experience but we make up for it in spirit and hustle. The boys are improving very fast and we hope to have 3 or 4 boys who will meet. The team has wrestled Spring-ville- , Union, Uintah and I.ehi. not faired too well up have They to date but several boys are showing promise. They are Jim Mitchell, who has not been pinned in two years and has won 3 out of 4 this year. Tom Crow-Cat- s ther and Charles Burgess also have looked good. The first home meet was Jan. 14, in the Mens gym. Lets keep jour eyes on these boys who wrestle. pre-seaso- Pioneers Fall To Wildcats V, 52-4- 0 Kar Korner pre-seaso- Gary Rose The new cars are all out and they look pretty good. General Motors came out with 5 all newly designed models. Chrysler Corp. has pretty much stayed to 5.7 body designs, while Ford Motor Co. has gone in for more conservative styling Ford has added a new Galaxie Thun-derbir- d remain about the same as 58. Corvette remains the countrys hottest car. It would seem as though the horsepower race may be over; several of the new cars have horsepower ra tings dropped Chrysler and Pontiac have dominated thCjational Speed Weeks since 1957 and it appears that Pontiac with an all new engine and even more power will fight it out with the mighty Chrysler again. Chevy, though not making many major changes, is up in horsepower, and coupled with its new 4 speed transmission, should be tough to beat. The game was very close until the Cats broke it open in the third quarter on baskets by Cliff, Bob and Wayne. Corvette and anti-freez- Coach Frank Arnold and his cagers are faced with the same problem that has caused the last three or four Wildcat teams to sit out of the State Tournament in March The problem being, tied for second place and then playing the Pleasant Grove Vikings. Coach Don Crumps Grovers have defeated the Cats the last six games which date back three years ago. The team is determined not to let this go on. Look out Grovers' In his first season at B Y.H., one of the Arnold finest records a Wildcat team has ever had His team won eight and only lost to Juab Hes done a remarkable job with his Junior Varsity team. They've taken all but lour contests and according to Coach Gibson are fast improving Whatever victories are shared by this year's Wildcat teams, the cheerleaders must be included in them They have spent many nights afti r school making signs to create more school spirit. They are doing a gloat job in their important responsibility Remember it was just about this timc last year when Gary Rose injured his knee and had to have it operated on The doctors told him that he might not play basketball ogam but the Wildcat guard has worked hard throughout the summer to build up the weak knee and is now holding down a 10 3 average for league n play Jim Mitchell, B Y.H.
