Show Yld Cat Page 2 Editorial Know Your Teachers by Jean Anderson of It seems that most us regard that person who hands out assignments each night as more of a figure head, and even inhuman, than an honest to goodness human being. But you know, the older you get, the more you realize just how wonderful he is. Its hard to imagine that a teacher might be just as much afraid of a doctor or dentist as you are. Or that he can get his feelings hurt Christmas as just as easy as the next person. Or that he enjoys more. much as anybod yelse. But he does all that, and Then what makes a teacher a teacher? He makes mistakes just the same as anyone else, but when he does, he corrects his mistakes. You'll never see a teacher trying to put the blame on some one else, when it's he who is at fault. The reason he is a teacher is that he has learned this one basicfact, Abpve all to thiae ownsclf be true, and he wants you to learn it Take a good look at that man or woman who sits at the teachers desk. He makes mistakes, but hes trying to help you so you wont make them. Talk to him. Youll find hes a lot of fun, and hes not much different from you. 'Then listen to him. He wants to help you. Even though the assignments seem hard at times he knows whats best, and dont forget, he went through it once, too. Yld Cat Goes to Press Journalism is quite a class We have Mr. Mercer ALWAYS telling us to get busy cutting up the newspapers, and then, mind you, gluing them back on sheets of paper! After we get that all done, (of course, we have to have the right stories), and think we have a minute to sit peacefully for awhile, he tells us we have two weeks before the deadline on all stories for the Yld Cat. Well, the page editors get out their rulers and rack their brains (?) to think of something that will interest everyone concerned, and to get enough copy. They measure off so many inches for each article and try to get the page all balanced. After that big job is done and you hear a sighs of relief, along comes Jean better a different way! The urge to kill! Next we hear moans from the find out reporters when theywhich ones how many articles, words the and they are to write, required. They say theyll never yessiree! An-look- get it done, but they seem to manage somehow! First think we know, the deadline is here and what a scramble! The copyreaders change our stories around (but naturally to get the proper English phrases, clauses, and what have you), and off they go to the press. A couple of days later, the proofs come back to us and the proofreaders go blind finding the errors. , The next big job is for the page editors to find the articles for their pages and to get them glued on the dummy pages. Invariable we have too much copy, the stories are too long, and by the time the editors' get through cutting them to pieces, the reporter cant even recognize the articles he wrote! Well, the dummy pages are finally sent to the press, but dont think we can relax! All 400 copies have be distributed, and sent to other schools. In class, that same Jay, we give and receive criticism, and then no, we dont get to relax, but have to start all over again! Yes, journalisrp is quite a class! t Nov. 21, 1951 Yearbook Takes Shape Cats Victorious Over Vikings If you should happen into the art room at about 2:15 you would To make this year the most successful football season for Coach Owen Dixon, the B.Y.U. the Pleashigh Wildcats dumped ant Grove Vikings 28-- at B.Y.U. stadium November 7. At least they pretend to be. You had better knock before you go in so that if they arent busy they can at least act like it. Once you get in you will find co-edito-r, Wester Potter anxious- ly chasing layout editor, Joan Noel around the room. Goodness, is this what goes on in a classroom? There they go out into the hall. Now where are they going? Oh well, a few things like this have to be expected. "Our other Raphael Andrus, has his face buried in a book. Catching up on his homework, I bet. Gene Speakman, assistant editor, is measuring out lines, and is getting a few ideas together for the yearbook. We meander out into the hall and across the way into what everybody calls the dark room. In here we find Joan and Wester. What are they doing? Dont be too alarmed; they are only printing pictures. We also find photographers Lynn Staheli and Noel Halliday busily enlarging snapshots. After viewing this for awhile we hurry back to the art room and find index editor, Ruth Anderson, with a huge encyclopedia in front of her. She is trying to find out how to index a yearbook. We also find Kathy Read, copy editor, working real hard on the annual. We are unable to see Jess Taylor, business manager, and Dick Walker, assistant business manager, as they are somewhere else working. After about a half hour of struggle we are finally able to get an interview concerning our future yearbook. This is real confidential; there is going to be a special section for snapshots, so if you want some real corny pictures in the yearbook, hand them into any of the names mentioned above.
