Show i t May 24, 1951 X Yld Cat Page 4 Links Lineup by Sterling Loveland Well, another sport season has ended at B. Y. High. It wasn't the most successful season B. Y. High has ever enjoyed, but it also wasnt the w?rst. We had some fiije moments as well as a few bad ones. Like the last football game, when the Wildcats scratched their way to a 20-1victory over Springville. And the two thrilling basketball on games won by one point, oneColStan basket a last minute by win over Delta lins for a and the victory over Millard High. Also we showed real power in the other "two victories over North Summit and Wasatch. The Wildcats turned up some fine athletes in Stan Collins, Ab Christensen, and juniors, Dix Davis and David Crowton, along with Darrell Carter. Also, sophomores David KimCan-fielball, Ken Lindquist, Alan Dave McClaren, and Larry Knight should give theas coaches well as a few happy moments, robust Jack Clarke, a ninth grader. Baseball was perhaps the brightest spot for B. Y. They won four and lost two in league play to take second. Tennis was one of the silver linings for the Y, as Dunford and Pinegar won the region doubles title. At this writing they are waiting to play for the state class B doubles championship. So, taking everything into consideration its been a pretty successful year as far as athletics are concerned. A serious problem has come up at the Y. There are some indications that some athletes are smoking or drinking, or both. This is really a blot, not only on the school but on the person, for it shows a weakness of character. For if a person cant keep away from these things, he is not only ruining his career as an athlete, but as a citizen and a student. So lets all keep the good name this school has established and not do things detrimental to our school and ourselves. 9 37-3- 6 49-4- 8 pre-seaso- n Wildcats Tamed By Lose Two Carbon, in the sevA five run uprising enth inning paved the way for Carbon 9 to 3 over B. Y. High on the Wildcat field. Up until the seventh, it was a tight game and the Wildcats were in it all the way. Over in Carbon, it was a tight game, and Alan Morgan had a lead when 3 unearned runs came in, in the sixth on a dropwin for ped fly ball for a Carbon. 2-- 1 4-- 2 DWORD AND PAYSON It was brother against brother when the B. Y. High faced the Lions from Payson on the Wildcat diamond. Ken Lindquist finally won a 5 to 4 decision from his big brother Don Lindquist when Kay Clark singled in Ed Pinegar from second base in the tenth inning, to take a well played game in April. Over on the Payson field, however, it was a different story. Don Lindquist again started for Payson, but Ken was catching this time. Brother Don didnt enjoy his mound duty this time for he was knocked out of the box and the Y went on to take a lopsided 20 to 7 victory. Dave Crowton had four for five, while Lindquist and Clark also helped to pave the way to victory for the Wildcats. SPANISH FORK It took only one inning for Spanish Fork to turn defeat into victory. By scoring in the 6th inning they took on a 12 to 10 victory in the first league opener against B. Y. High. After leading 19 to 8, Spanish Fork loaded the bases and a dropped ball scored four runs to give the Dons the win. It Happens Every Spring Hi ho, hi ho, we go. . . its to the park This is the joyous song that girls as they trek to North Park for their phys. ed. class every Tuesday and Thursday (except is heard from the senior high during tornadoes). The phys. ed. classes go down to the park to play softball. You race down to the park, line up for roll call and then at last the teacher yells, Play ball. Then everyone races to their positions; such enthusiasm, such energy! My, how lucky. You find yourself up t obat. The pitcher throws the ball, its low and outside. Ball one, but the catcher misses it and the ball flies through the hole in the screen and then on to the tennis courts. After a few minutes the exciting game is resumed. The pitcher throws the ball, you swing the ball flies out to center field where all the fielders are gathered together, lying on the field seeking a sun tan. As you round third base one of the more energetic fielders picks up the ball and throws it to the pitcher. But by this time you are safe at home, after having raced around three bases and six mud holes, (as a result of yesterdays storm). Now the fielder is sun tanning again. After a hard game, the teacher Then a finally yells Showers! mad dash, the teams finally come to life. You race to the womens gym. Class is over at last. PINEGAR TAKE STATE B.Y. Boys Romp 6-- 6-- 3, 1 Toj Victory , I j a good Playing , game, Kent Dunford and Ed Pine-- - f; gar defeated Smoot and Hayto take the and mound, doubles championship. region was the fourth straight year that B. Y. High has wan the region. I doubles championship. serve was sharp Dunfords very and came in fine, while Pinegars net play and general court play aided greatly in the win. However, their play was just average for these two champs. Although Smoot and played good tennis and showed plenty of spirit, they just didnt have the class and ability jt of Dun and Pinn who are given a very good chance in the Class B state doubles. all-aroun- d 6-- 3 I 6-- 1 Hay-moun- d fj Athlete of the Month Aside from being one of the few married men in B. Y. High, Alan Morgan is just an average guy in school, but on a football or baseball field, Morgan again becomes outstanding, as a fullback and as a pitcher. Morgan is a man who gets his bumps though, first having a helmet strap break causing a gash on his head, then getting married. But he has lived through this and come shining through to become B. Y. Highs Athlete of the Month. The Married Man, as he is now known, was born in Spanish Fork, on May 12, 1933. He moved to Provo and enrolled at the Y in the first grade, and finally came to stay in his sophomore year and graduates this year. Morgan lettered in football and baseball two years, and was main string fullback until his injury. Another distinction that Alan holds is being on the Valedictorian Panel this year. He is also collecting Army insignias from different countries. This collection now numbers in the thousands. These things pretty well qualify him to be B. Y. Highs first married Athlete of the Month. Y. High Wins Final Game The Wildcats reversed that procedure with a little variation as the Cats collected four runs in the seventh inning to win a hard victory over the Fork-ers- . fought Ken Lindquist pitched, caught, and hit a terrific 8-- 7 ' Wildcats Split With Juab -Just one pitch, a wild one, proved to be costly to the Juab Wasps, for it allowed a runner , to score from third base in the last of the seventh, to enable-- , B. Y. High to take a hard foug:7,,", game. In Juab, a walk with the bases loaded gave the wasps the game and a split with Juab in two games. It was a good game with the Wildcats leading most of the' way. . |
