Show THE YLD CAT Page Four Monday, May 5, 1947 SPORTS ON PARADE TENNIS PREVIEW OVER THE PLATE 1947 Wildcat Baseball Squad By Clayton McConkie Baseball Fever The Y. High has long been noted for their superior tennis teams. When tennis season rolls around the victories start to roll into the Y. trophy case. This year is no exception. The future is with all last bright years letter-me- n returning to the net play. These are the boys who took the region play last year. Baseball, Americas most favorite pastime, is easily drawing the main spotlight in sports, both professionally and otherwise. At B. Y. High, which is part of the otherwise, the situation is no different although the spirit of the sport hasnt yet showed up. Tlie team, at present, is riding on three wins and two losses but still very much in the running for the runner-u- p spot or even the crown. All they need is a litle more support and you know where that comes from. Star of the Month Heading the tennis team is ace netter Bob Kirkpatrick. Bob is a junior this year and will play the number one singles for the squad. In last years net doings he was undefeated in regional tussels. The B. Y. Invitational last year found Bob second place in the high school division. His summer was spent in practice and open tourneys in which he placed in last year. Bob has improved much this year and it is unlikely that he will find any stiff competition in regional play. Bob is the likely candidate for the state champion this year. Go to it, Bob. Not many bids have been made for this months honor of best player but nevertheless one has been picked. For a great pitching job in the last three games, the staff of this column has named Vern Whatcott as Star of the Month of April. Whatcott played consistent ball all the through and has held up fectly for a pitcher who pitched nearly all of the three games. has way per- has last Congrats also to Bob Kirkpat- rick who is rapidly reaching the peak of superiority in tennis. TRACK DOINGS This is a test to ascertain just how dumb you are. The College Bob is followed close by LaMar Rawlins who came in second in the school open tournament. LaMar, like Bob, plays tennis most of the summer and travels to visit enticing tournaments. He is a junior this year. La Mar took the sophomore singles division in last years invitational. La Mar Rawlins is, readily, one of the main-staof the team. ys Entrance Eexamination Board has determined to keep dumbells, even as you and I out of college. Results they have added to their schedule of exams a most novel sort of torture, under the diabolical form of the following Intelligence Test: Directions for taking this test must be followed very closely. They are: 1. Do not leave your fingerprints on the paper; we can tell who you are by you signed John Henry. 2. Use a pen with ink in it. Dry pens will not be accepted. 3. Do not start until the examiner yells, Give er the Gun and do not stop till he hollers, Shove in your clutch. 4. Underline the words which make the following statements true: Vern Whatcott and Jim Rawlins have spent most of their time on the doubles courts. The pair went to the final in the high school division of the B. Y. Invitational last year and are expected to take it this year. Vern and Jim play a well coordinated game taking victory in their stride in most cases. They are out to show some classy tennis in this their 1. These four also entered as a relay team but lost at the last minute. As you all know, track is the hardest of all sports to train for. With meets few and far between and little incentive to train, it is hard to keep plugging along in between low points. With spring fever on one side and the hot sun beating down from its a hard life for any man. The track events, the oldest of sports, are starting to give way to the modem faster moving sports.
