Associated Beehive Seed Growers Of The Uintah Basin Weevil in Your Alfalfa Weevil By this time most Uintah Basin Seed Growers have found more or less weevil in their fields. Some spots are looking as. if the alfalfa might have been frosted they are so badly weevil eaten. Other fields have only a few here and there, so far. In most of the patches where weevil showed about the first of the month, the worms do not seem so plentiful on the hay now. A lot of them have made their growth and gone down to spin their racoons. These cocoons can be found in the dry leaves close to the ground. In Mallard county, and other .districts where they have had weevil for a number of years, THE WEEVIL ARE USUALLY ABOUT THROUGH WORKING BY JUNE 20 and practically all affected, the alfalfa plants are weakened. The hay is likely to be poor unless the crop is cut before too many of thte leaves are gone. If such stuff is left for first crop seed the plants may be too weak to produce a seed crop. This disease seldom shows up in the second cutting because it does not seem to be able to start in hot, dry weather. Weeds We find a lot of GREEN FOXTAIL or WILD MILLET just getting well started in some fields. If the season remains diy you may be able to choke it back and keep it from seeding, but the chances are that UNLESS YOU GET THE HAY OFF AND KILL THIS GRASS BY CULTIVATION WHILE THE GROUND IS DRY, IT WILL GO TO SEED AND BE HARVESTED WITH YOUR SEED id cocoons. CROP. .Wq have just had quite a period of cool weather that may have delayed the hatching of some of the eggs. WE FPND SEVERAL WEEVIL THIS MORNING THAT WERE VEi. SMALL. Probably they hatched since the weather began to warm up again. If there are many of these late weevil coming on they may work ..RUSSIAN THISTLE is also getting a big start on thte bare spots. It comes out of alfalfa seed more easily than the millet but it may lower the quality of your crop and increase the shrinkage unless you can get rid of it before threshing time. until the first of July or longer, unless the alfalfa is cut the ground cultivated djy. off and Grasshoppers Many alfalfa fields are producing big crops of little grasshoppers nowadays. Some of them are evidently just hatched, they are so small. No doubt more are hatching every day too. It seems very likely that there will be enough of them to do a lot of damage in some fields unless they are killed. We have plenty of poison but if you have some bran or can get some, you had better save it for grasshopper poison. There is very little bran in the Basin if the hoppers should get bad. A Fungus Disease If you will examine the RANK SPOTS in your alfalfa fields, especially if you irrigated the latter part of May, you will find quite a number of YELLOW LEAVES or LEAVES WITH BIG YELLOW SPOTS on them. SomJe of these leaves are curled now. On the under side of the leaves you will find what looks like a brown dust. This dust is the spores of the fungus. This condition is caused by a fungus disease which seems to be favored by cool, damp weather or cool weather just after irrigating When it gets on the leaves the green color disappears and the infected leaves finally die. If many of the leaves are We found a small bunch of LARGE DODDER today. It will be hard to see for a while yet, but the farmer who expects to have a first-clas- s crop will be on the lookout all the timte. OTHER WEEDS are getting started too... Last years experience was enough to show a great many seed growers that weedy seed crops do not pay very well. It takes hard cleaning to get out even a big part of the weeds. Usually a weedy crop still has some weeds in it after all the cleaning is dionei. The weedy or trashy seed Crop is going to shrink heavily and most likely will not be first class after that. The final returns are disappointing and the seedsman wha buys the weedy crop may not be able to sell it again. If he does, the people who plant the steed and! grow a crop of weeds, will not car to buy any more of that kind of seed, and that will reflect on all the Uintah Basin alfalfa seed. YOU CAN CONTROL Weevil, yellow weeds by cutting and! cultivatin' now. leaf and most of the IT WILL PAY YOU to arrange your fanning business so that you can turn yoiu: weedy alfalfa into mteat, milk or wooL Then any alfalfa that is not going to make a profitable crop of seed shotuld go that way too. By feeding the poor stuff as nay, you will have more time to take care of your good seed when you need to and your help and! threshing will cost you less money. Then if all the seed you harvest and thrtesh is good seed and yields well it will make you more money per acre and it may very well make you more net money for the whole farm, because vou will not have to pay for harvesting and threshing a lot of poor stuff. Its not so much what you get, as what you have left after the expenses are paid1, that counts. Make your seed crop make you money, or make hay of it. We want to see you make money on your seed. J. G.
